Submissions to the 87th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film

Favs/dislikes: 5:0. This is a list of submissions to the 87th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. Nine shortlisted contenders will be revealed a week before the announcement of the Oscar nominations. The submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2013 and 30 September 2014. The deadline for submissions was 1 October 2014, with The Academy announcing a list of eligible films later that month. The Academy will announce a list of eligible submissions in October 2014. Nine finalists from among the dozens of entries will be shortlisted in mid-January, with the final five nominees to be announced in January 2015. For the first time, the name of the director will be engraved onto the Oscar statuette, in addition to the name of the country. 76 countries submitted a film before the deadline, with three countries submitting films for the first time. Mauritania submitted Timbuktu directed by Abderrahmane Sissako; Panama submitted the documentary Invasion directed by Abner Benaim; and Kosovo submitted Three Windows and a Hanging directed by Isa Qosja.

  24. The Eye of Cinema: Stunning B&W Cinematography's icon

The Eye of Cinema: Stunning B&W Cinematography

Favs/dislikes: 5:0. Cinema is a visual medium, therefore it should first and foremost be regarded as such. Cinematography is not simply about capturing great looking images, it's an understanding of framing, movement, angles, light, space, and how these elements are composed throughout the film. It’s an art of observation and perception. It takes a great eye to be a great photographer, however it takes both a great eye and a great mind to be a great cinematographer. Great cinematography isn't simply about knowing how to compose an image, it's knowing how to compose an entire scene, entire film, not merely for the sake of bringing the script to the screen, but also to visually captive the viewer in doing so. These films represent some of the finest cinema has to offer in black & white.
