Yahoo's 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die
Favs/dislikes: 7:0. "It’s one thing to make a list of movies that are essential. But it’s something else to make a list of movies that are funny. So after some heated debates, a shouting match or two and at least one pie fight, the staff at Yahoo! Movies presents this list of the "100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die.” We didn’t necessarily choose the “best” comedies out there but those we see as the funniest. An adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale,” for instance, might technically be a comedy although it’s seriously lacking in yuks. Meanwhile “Pulp Fiction” – which is on the list -- might not seem like an obvious choice, but provides more belly laughs in it than anything Kevin James has ever done. Anyway, some of these movies you might have seen, others you might not have heard of, but all of them are pretty darned funny." -

20 Movies With The Most Brilliant Sound Design
Favs/dislikes: 6:0. The world of cinema interest is ruled initially by actors, and secondly by directors. They always overshadow the other technical works in cinema, but for somebody getting into film, aspects like cinematography or editing are just as important to them. However, the role of the sound designer and the importance of sound design are relegated to a secondary position, ignoring how essential they are in building a film. The mixing stage is the process capable of providing tension in any thriller, and the Foley recording is the process capable of inventing sounds for a film. One of the reasons the sound design is discreet is the tradition of making it “invisible”. A classical film would tell us that a good sound design is the one an audience is unable to perceive. But with these 20 examples, we can see that sound design can be a creative and powerful tool capable of filling a film with different emotions, or even changing the speech behind the film. -

BBC's The 100 Greatest TV Series of the 21st Century

That's in part because TV has played such a crucial role in many of our lives over the past 18 months, when we have relied on it for information, entertainment, solace and inspiration in equal measure. It felt like the right time to survey the television landscape because arguably it has been the defining art form of the past 21 years: where once, rightly or wrongly, it was largely patronised as cinema's younger, more rough-and-ready sibling, today its artistic credibility is unassailable, while the advent of streaming platforms has also given shows the ability to reach unprecedented global audiences all at once. And so, in order to mark TV's ascendancy, we have decided to ask the question: what are the greatest TV series of the 21st Century? While in no way definitive, the answers we have collated are fascinating – and, we hope, will inspire TV lovers everywhere to both seek out titles they haven't seen before, and further reflect on and discuss ones they have. In total, 460 different series were voted for by 206 TV experts – critics, journalists, academics and industry figures – who came from 43 countries, from Albania to Uruguay. Of these voters, 100 were women, 104 were men, and two were non-binary. Collider's 100 Essential Movies Any Serious Film Fan Should See
Favs/dislikes: 6:0. If you’re a budding cinephile, it can be difficult to know where to start or even to find a baseline. Cinema becomes more daunting every year as new films are released and old films are reappraised. With this in mind, the staff of Collider.com has collaborated on 100 movies we think every film fan needs to see. To be clear, this list is not an ending, but a beginning. It’s meant to serve as a starting point. Just because a movie didn’t make this list of 100, that doesn’t mean it’s “inessential.” Rather, we wanted to provide a good foundation that would spark a person’s curiosity about where to go next. Additionally, while many essential movies were done by white, male directors because historically those are the people who have had power, we didn’t want to neglect international cinema, female filmmakers, or filmmakers of color, and we have sought to include their work here. Complex's 50 Indie Movies You Need To See Before You Die
Favs/dislikes: 6:0. Today, June 21 2013, is the official start of summer, a technical bit of information Hollywood's studio execs have never given a damn about. For them and their expensive beach-season tentpole movies, summer officially begins once May calendars are introduced—meaning, since Iron Man 3, moviegoers have been steadily bombarded with gargantuan flicks the likes of Man of Steel and Fast & Furious 6, and, with World War Z opening, that's not about to stop anytime soon. What's a cinema buff to do? As always, seek out the nearest independent theater and/or art-house venue and drop cash on the latest no-budget films worthy of such concerted efforts. Without that kind of open-mindedness, DIY moviemaking would cease to exist, robbing cinephiles of flicks that could potentially rival the hallowed likes of Reservoir Dogs, The Terminator, and Night of the Living Dead.
