6. 150 Movies You Should Die Before You See's icon

150 Movies You Should Die Before You See

Favs/dislikes: 26:7. 2010 book by writer/ reviewer/ editor Steve Miller, covering what he considered to be the very worst movies of all time. Note that some movies in the book, including Suspiria, The Black Cat and Braindead (Dead Alive) are considered by many to be good films rather than bad. The title of the book reads "150 Movies" but there's actually 153 in there, including 2 versions of Attack of the Giant Leeches. The book is split into sections, rather than ordered: 1-5 "Exhibits in the Bad Movie Museum" 6-13 "Big Budget Bombs" 14-19 "Creaky Classics" 20-23 "Freaky Families" 24-35 "Gory, Gorier, Goriest" 36-40 "Happy Holidays!" 41-48 "Inauspicious Beginnings" 49-56 "It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time" 57-62 "Kinda-Sorta Based on the Book" 63-87 "Monstrous Monster Movies" 88-98 "Mysteries of the Orient" 99-113 "Independent Oddities" 114-117 "Strange Superheroes" 118-122 "Awful Aliens" 123-153 "Test Your Stanima"

  15. "Death on the Cheap - The Lost B Movies of Film Noir" by Arthur Lyons's icon

"Death on the Cheap - The Lost B Movies of Film Noir" by Arthur Lyons

Favs/dislikes: 26:0. "Robert Mitchum once commented to Arthur Lyons about his movies of the 1940s and 1950s: "Hell, we didn't know what film noir was in those days. We were just making movies. Cary Grant and all the big stars at RKO got all the lights. We lit our sets with cigarette butts." Film noir was made to order for the "B," or low-budget, part of the movie double bill. It was cheaper to produce because it made do with less lighting, smaller casts, limited sets, and compact story lines—about con men, killers, cigarette girls, crooked cops, down-and-out boxers, and calculating, scheming, very deadly women. In Death on the Cheap, Arthur Lyons entertainingly looks at the history of the B movie and how it led to the genre that would come to be called noir, a genre that decades later would be transformed in such "neo-noir" films as Pulp Fiction, Fargo, and L.A. Confidential. The book, loaded with movie stills, also features a witty and informative filmography (including video sources) of B films that have largely been ignored or neglected—“lost" to the general public but now restored to their rightful place in movie history thanks to Death on the Cheap."

  17. Frank Darabont's Greatest Movies of All Time's icon

Frank Darabont's Greatest Movies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 26:2. The Empire Magazine asked Frank Darabont to write about his one movie masterpiece. Instead he chose 224. Two remarks about his selection: 1. What follows is not to be confused with a 'best' list. I hate 'best' lists. They are compiled by arrogant fools for the satisfaction of provoking other arrogant fools into spewing angry rebuttals, and before you know it everybody's all puffed-up and dancing around like mountain apes. Stop it, really. Just because I have my favorites, it doesn't mean I think yours suck. I offer my list as highly subjective opinion, not empirically provable fact. If you disagree with it, don't freak out. Instead, be constructive and send me your list so I can fill some of the gaps in my film education. 2. Films are not listed in order of preference, and my genre headings are loose definitions at best. Yes, I'm painfully aware that The Godfather could just as well be listed under 'drama' as 'gangster film'. Yes, Rollerball might be deemed 'science-fiction' rather than 'sports'. Whatever your opinion on these matters, you're absolutely right." 10 movies are selected for each genre, with some exceptions. Order of genres in the list: Drama Science Fiction Comedy War Western Horror Film Noir Thriller Epic/Adventure (11) Costume Drama Crime Music/Musical Sports Action Prison Biographical Silent Era Fantasy (12 movies) Animated Gangsters (11 movies) Socio-Political Romantic Comedy

Gothic: The Dark Heart of Film

Favs/dislikes: 26:0. In October 2013, the British Film Institute unveiled an exhibition chronicling the history of dark and macabre films. In an ambitious project, the BFI unveiled a collection of a large number of films spanning four categories, bringing these films to British cinemas over a four month period. Films are arranged chronologically by theme. The Four Parts: - Monstrous (1-26) - The Dark Arts (27-48) - Haunted (49-71) - Love is a Devil (72-99) Although this exhibition includes a large number of plays, professional talks, documentaries, television series' and shorts, this list contains only the feature films presented in the exhibition.
