Gothic Cinema Filmography (Routledge Film Guidebooks) (2020)

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Unranked. By Xavier Aldana Reyes. Arguing for the need to understand Gothic cinema as an aesthetic mode, this book explores its long history, from its transitional origins in phantasmagoria shows and the first ‘trick’ films to its postmodern fragmentation in the Gothic pastiches of Tim Burton. This groundbreaking book is the first thorough chronological, transhistorical and transnational study of Gothic cinema, ideal for both new and seasoned scholars, as well as those with a wider interest in the Gothic.

  9. IndieWire’s 35 Disturbing Foreign Films to Watch's icon

IndieWire’s 35 Disturbing Foreign Films to Watch

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. World cinema has given us plenty of auteurs hell-bent on creating the most disturbing experience possible, from Pier Paolo Pasolini to Catherine Breillat, Gaspar Noe, and Takashi Miike. Below, IndieWire highlights a selection of foreign-language films likely to keep you up at night terrified, or thinking, or both. Leave it to any country except the U.S. to render the worst possible horrors, psychological, physical, and otherwise, onscreen in unflinching detail. While some of these films listed below are, in fact, outright horror films, others take a more psychic or spiritual approach to peeling back on society’s, and humankind’s, worst tendencies — or while querying war, faith, or sexuality. While many of the directors highlighted here made a personal brand out of pushing the limits of extreme storytelling, consider the below just a selection (or starter kit, if you will) to prime you for further viewing.

Note that many of these are suggested for teens and up. A few are definitely for mature audiences only."
  14. Pete Walker Filmography's icon

    Pete Walker Filmography

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Pete Walker (born 1939 in Brighton, Sussex) is an English film director, writer and producer, specialising in horror and sexploitation films, frequently combining the two. His films often featured sadistic authority figures, such as priests or judges, punishing anyone - usually young women - who doesn't conform to their strict personal moral codes, but he has denied there being any political subtext to his films. Because of the speed with which he had to make his films, Walker often used the same reliable actors, including Andrew Sachs and Sheila Keith, the latter playing memorable villainesses in four of Walker's pictures. 15. ReelRundown's Top 10 Best Horror Anime's icon

ReelRundown's Top 10 Best Horror Anime

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. "If you’re looking for spooks, scares, and blood-curdling scenarios, then one thing or another, you’re looking for Horror Anime. In the Anime world, there’s only just a handful bunch of shows wherein the word “horror” comes true to its name. Most of the time, anime shows with extreme monstrosities, blood, and gore are already considered as horror. But, as particular as I am with that, I can’t just accept all of those as such without them proving themselves with some horrifying redeeming qualities. That is why here on this list, I’m assembling the Top 10 Best Horror Anime based on how scary and creepy they really are and how they pass my taste for chills and shivers. Actually, making this list is quite difficult for me because there really are just a few horror anime shows that are really…um…dreadful."
