Time Out's The 50 Best Japanese Movies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. "Thanks to the likes of Hirokazu Kore-eda, Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Mamoru Hosoda, Japanese cinema is in rude health. It’s the home of one of the greatest filmmakers to ever stride the planet in Akira Kurosawa, but he’s not the only GOAT candidate Japan has produced – heck, there’s a whole field’s worth of them. Yasujirō Ozu, Hayao Miyazaki, Kenji Mizoguchi and the chin-stroking cineaste’s pick, Kon Ichikawa, all deserve a place in the firmament too. Between them, they’ve made a vast contribution to the movie canon and bridged the gap between east and west with classics as varied as Tokyo Story, Seven Samurai and My Neighbor Totoro. The country’s booming silent era gave way to a post-war golden age, which in turn spawned a punky, provocative ’60s New Wave and an explosion in anime. Masterpieces abound, many of them vastly influential in the US and Europe, and a cultural osmosis has seen ideas exchanged between like-minded creators like Kurosawa and John Ford and Studio Ghibli and Pixar. Tarantino and Scorsese are apostles of this remarkable national cinema, and Godzilla continues to roar in Hollywood blockbusters. But there’s so much to get stuck into, it’s not always easy to know where to begin. To coincide with a special Akira Kurosawa season at London’s BFI Southbank, we’ve taken a deep dive into the best of this god-level national cinema. Allow us to take you on a tour of the ultimate Nihon gold nuggets." --Time Out
  6. Time Out's The Best Korean Movies of All Time's icon

Time Out's The Best Korean Movies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Loved Parasite? Dig deeper into Hallyuwood’s awesome back catalogue Written by James Balmont Contributors Phil de Semlyen & Matthew Singer Tuesday 10 May 2022 Contrary to believe in some corners of the west, South Korean cinema existed long before Parasite and Squid Game. Sure, Bong Joon-ho’s 2019 Oscar-winner might represent the pinnacle of the country’s movie industry – and the massive success of Netflix’s Squid Game confirmed it as a worldwide player in streaming too – but its history runs much deeper. For decades, Korean filmmakers have been producing thrilling, imaginative work with a distinctive vision, subverting genre conventions along the way. Entering its renaissance era in the early 2000s, charged by films like Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy and Joon-ho’s The Host, Korean movies became known for their ultraviolence and political invective, but dig into the canon and you’ll find a wide range of complex emotions expressed in many different ways. Where to start? Well, here: with some of the best Korean movies ever made.

  10. Tiny Mix Tapes: Favorite 30 Films of 2012's icon

Tiny Mix Tapes: Favorite 30 Films of 2012

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Let’s all just admit that 2012 started to get a little weird towards the end. At least Stateside, anyway. There was all that unpleasant political stuff going on; somehow rape became a gift and then it was bad again; and there was that inclement weather along the East Coast that totally had nothing to do with man-made climate change. Amid all this socialecological turmoil, we shouldn’t blame you for missing some pretty big news in the world of cinema. But we will, anyway. After all, this year we said goodbye to one controversial auteur (Béla Tarr) and adopted a different personal pronoun for another (Lana Wachowski). Whit Stillman finally made another film after a nearly 15-year hiatus (Damsels In Distres), brilliantly showcasing the talent of Generation Me’s answer to Chloë Sevigny (Greta Gerwig). Plus, any year that a Zachary Oberzan film comes out (Your brother. Remember?) is a good year for movies. Thankfully, all that Mayan apocalypse dreck ran its course a couple years ago, leaving room for some more rarefied grapplings with the end of all things (Tarr’s number-one stunner, The Turin Horse). And all that IRL political stuff we mentioned earlier? Not nearly as troubling as 5 Broken Cameras or This Is Not A Film, movies that managed so brilliantly to elucidate the very real human loss of geopolitical conflict. But what really blew us away this year weren’t the super-good films that defied convention or made grand political statements. Instead, we were left with our mouths agape by films helmed by auteurs confident enough to be okay simply ignoring convention, never feeling the need to prove anything outside the piece of work at hand, some of which were at ease merely reveling in the sheer virtuosity of their principal actors’ performances (The Master). Oh, and Béla, you’ll be missed. –PAUL BOWER
