The Dardennes' 79 Favorite Movies.
Favs/dislikes: 18:0. When the comfortable sheen of fiction quickly gives way to the unsettling currents of reality, you know you're watching a Dardennes film. Brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne are the preeminent voices of cinematic realism today. Embracing a docu-fiction aesthetic they honed while making dozens of documentaries early in their career, the brothers bring to light the struggles of the working class in their films, such as Rosetta, The Promise, Two Days, One Night, and, most recently, The Unknown Girl. La Cinetek published a list of the Dardennes' 79 favorite films of the 20th century. The list places a notable emphasis on realism, with films from Ken Loach, John Cassavetes, Krzysztof Kieślowski, and Robert Bresson (four films listed). But the brothers' biggest influence was clearly the Italian neorealist Roberto Rossellini, eight of whose movies appear on the list. François Truffaut's Le Plaisir des Yeux
Favs/dislikes: 17:0. "This book is a collection of essays, some insightful, some brief "fillers." Together it would be hard to rate the grouping as 5-stars, save for a sentimental attachment to Truffaut's work. The book is not just the reflections of the director upon his own work. Nor is it only French cinema. One essay is entitled "The Renaissance of American cinema," and in other essays he looks at the work of Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Woody Allen, Orson Wells, and Charlie Chaplin. Naturally he also looks at the famous French directors, from Jean Cocteau, Jean Renoir and the one man who was so responsible for saving the earlier French works, Henri Langlois. A major section of the book is devoted to essays that relate to the impact of literature on the cinema." -

Stanley Kubrick's Top Ten Favorite Films
Favs/dislikes: 15:0. In this choice one can detect a broadminded attitude towards very dissimilar aesthetic experiences, with a preference nevertheless for European art films strongly colored by a pessimistic view of life (Fellini, Antonioni, Bergman); and a predilection for American directors known for their larger-than-life, as also for their marginal position with regard to the system (Welles, Huston, Chaplin, W.C. Fields, Howard Hughes, Wellman). -
