Netflix movies (USA)
Favs/dislikes: 62:3. There are already several lists on iCheckMovies of films available on Netflix. Unfortunately they have a tendency to be incomplete and quickly become out of date. This is an attempt to make a more comprehensive and semi-automated version. A program scrapes data from instantwatcher.com of everything available on Netflix, and then cross-references the title and year against a list of films that meet a set of criteria for notability or interest (including every movie that is an official check). Titles that are official checks are listed first. IMPORTANT NOTE: I am no longer able to scrape the website I was getting the data from. I am trying to find a solution, but the list is not currently being updated. -

Viennale
Favs/dislikes: 7:0. All Feature Films shown at the Vienna International Film Festival since 1996. From the Homepage: The Viennale is Austria’s most important international film event, as well as one of the oldest and best-known festivals in the German-speaking world. Every October, the Viennale takes place in beautiful cinemas in Vienna’s historic center, providing the festival with an international orientation and a distinctive urban flair. A high percentage of the more than 96,000 visitors to the festival from Austria and abroad is made up of a decidedly young audience. In its main program, the Viennale shows a carefully picked selection of new films from all over the globe as well as from Austria, some of them international premieres. The choice of about 300 films offers a cross-section of bold film-making which stands apart from the aesthetics of mainstream conventionality and is politically relevant. Aside from its focus on the newest feature films of every genre and structural form imaginable, the festival gives particular attention to documentary films, international short films, as well as experimental works and crossover films. Documentaries, Short Films, Retrospectives, Tributes and Special Programs are not included in this list. -

From Muybridge to Chazelle : Essential films
Favs/dislikes: 3:0. I love "essential films" lists, so I decided to make my own version. This list (in chronological order) includes critically-praised movies, more obscure but acclaimed films, pictures that achieved a cult status over the years and famous movies that have an important place in the popular culture, regardless of the reviews. Enjoy ! -

Cocaine Fiends and Reefer Madness: History of Drugs in the Movies 1894-1978
Favs/dislikes: 3:0. Silent Films #1 - #420 Sound Films #421 - #1363 Underground Films #1364 - #1412 Stand-Alone TV Programs #1413 - 1430 *Not included are TV series where the whole series is referenced but no specific episodes and the section in the Appendix labeled Drug Abuse Films as it contains many duplicates from other sections and many regional educational films that have little to no information about them online. Not on IMDB*: El Cocaine (1930) - Togo Mizrahi Dancing Powder (1911) Dentiste (1897) Lumiere Dope Trade In Chinatown (1910) The Elixir of Life (1911) UK film Fabricants Clandestins d'Alcool (1908) Gontran Emule de Sherlock Holmes (1912) Halbblut (1913) The Horrors of Drink (1901) R.W. Paul A Late Guest (1910) Pathé Winkle's Great Discovery (1913) Account Settled (1947) amateur 16mm silent British/French film Again (1966) about drugs mixed with music causing suicide Timothy Leary at Folsom Prison (1973) Cold Nose a.k.a. Naso Freddo (1975) Filippo Milani short film Crown Trial (1935) starring Tubby Hayes and directed by Widgey Newman Dr. Jekyll (1964) book sites as originating from Italy but gives no further details Dum Maro (1973?) Indian film about marijuana Electric Ladyland (1972?) Listed in book index but I can't find an actual reference to it on the page referenced in the index. The Evil Weed (1972) silent comedy directed by George Leonard, producer of the band Sha Na Na. Goldfever (1967) dir. Donald Nestington La Guerre de L'opium (1941) germany-produced Images du monde visionnaire (1964) directed by Eric Duvivier A Lone Assassin (1972) Japanese film about drug addict sister LSD: Viaje al Terror (1967?) Spanish-Argentinian Poison Belt (1935) book references it as an American Sherlock Holmes film but the Doyle source book is a sequel to The Lost World, not a Holmes novel at all. Could be mistakenly referenced. Release (1972) by Wiener Filmkollektiv and features Timothy Leary; anti-heroin film Rhythm of Africa (1960?) Book claims it was "conceived" by Jean Cocteau. I've also seen references to this being released in 1948. The Sandal (1970) https://www.bfi.org.uk/films-tv-people/4ce2b6cd17c15 Sada Kalo (1954) Indian film starring Gurudas Bannerjee Shangri-La (1968?) Indian documentary about Goa Sharks (1975) Book says it features teens getting loaded on the beach in the opening *For Stand-Alone TV Programs and Underground Films, only films present on IMDB were included on the list as both lists included many very obscure films that I could locate little to no reference to anywhere outside this book. Given the author did much of his research at a local library in San Francisco, the possibility exists than many of the referenced films are super 8mm home movies and other amateur productions that make it difficult to determine the source of. -

The Criterion Collection
Favs/dislikes: 830:4. Since 1984, the Criterion Collection, has been dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world and publishing them in editions that offer the highest technical quality and award-winning, original supplements for a wider and wider audience. The foundation of the collection is the work of such masters of cinema as Kurosawa, Fellini, Bergman, Tarkovsky, Hitchcock, and Kubrick. Each film is presented uncut, in its original aspect ratio, as its maker intended it to be seen. Source -

1001 movies you must see before you die (all editions)
Favs/dislikes: 158:1. The famous book of Schneider "1001 movies you must see before you die" has several editions. Every few years a new edition is published with new titles (after removing some other titles). Also there are editions especially for a certain country with additional titles from that country. In this list I'll try to collect as many titles as possible that were in at least one edition of this book. So far I included, apart from the original US editions (rank 1-1250), the Dutch (rank 1251-1261), the Swedish (rank 1262-1283), the Greek (rank 1284-1325), the Norwegian (rank 1326-1332), the Finnish (rank 1333-1351), the Danish (rank 1352-1363), the Brazilian (rank 1364-1375), the Hungarian (rank 1376-1381) and the French (rank 1382-1398) editions. I found information about the Portuguese, Spanish, Slovanian, Croatian, Turkish and Polish editions, but these didn't have additional titles. I’ll search for more editions. If you’ve got information about any other, please let me know. -
The Best Films According to Andrew Sarris's The American Cinema
Favs/dislikes: 10:0. In Andrew Sarris's The American Cinema, every director in the book has their full filmography listed, and Sarris italicizes the best films of each director. Here is the full collection of every film italicized in the book (with the exception of Out of the Past, which remains unitalicized likely as an error as he calls it Jacques Torneur's masterpiece). The book has multiple sections, with who Sarris viewed as the pantheon directors at the top, and slowly dwindling in quality as the list goes down. However, there is merit to be found towards the bottom, as he lists a series of oddities, one-shots, and, at the time, newcomers, as well as subjects for further research. -

The Criterion Channel (part 1)
Favs/dislikes: 13:0. DIRECTORS A-K In two parts, this list includes all featured films streamable through the Criterion Channel. Not counting some films that lack IMDb pages (but I'm adding them where I can): To the Unknown (Michael Almereyda, 2017, 6m) The Lonedale Operator (Michael Almereyda, 2018, 15m) Two Sons and a River of Blood (Amber Bemak/Angelo Madsen Minax, 2021, 11m) The Golden Chain (Adebukola Bodunrin/Ezra Claytan Daniels, 2016, 13m) Black Journal: Alice Coltrane (St. Clair Bourne, 1970, 13m) Gotta Make This Journey: Sweet Honey in the Rock (Joseph Camp, 1983, 58m) Melons (At a Loss) (Patty Chang, 1998, 4m) Omega Rising Women of Rastafari (D. Elmina Davis, 1988, 52m) Invoking Justice (Deepa Dhanraj, 1991, 86m) Love in the Time of AIDS (Deepa Dhanraj, 2006, 47m) Africa, the Jungle, Drums and Revolution (Suliman Mohamed Ibrahim Elnour, 1979, 11m) Pirated! (Nguyen Tan Hoang, 2000, 11m) "untitled video" (Sujin Lee, 2002, 5m) Nonstop (Zac Manuel/Marta Rodriguez Maleck, 2021, 12m) Their Fall Our All (Terence Nance, 2014, 8m) Voices of the Morning (Meena Nanji, 1992, 14m) my favorite software is being here (Alison Nguyen, 2021, 20m) Bleue (Ornella Pacchioni, 2021, 19m) The Sounds of Science (Jean Painlevé, 2002, 96m) Odds and Ends (Michelle Parkerson, 1993, 28m) Remembrance of József Romvári (Sophy Romvari, 2020, 8m) ...After He Left (Athi-Patra Ruga, 2008, 11m) Public Service Announcement (Athi-Patra Ruga, 2014, 19m) La Llorona (Stephanie Saint Sanchez, 2003, 9m) Bittersweet Survival (J.T. Takagi/Christine Choy, 1982, 27m) Queenie (Cai Thomas, 2020, 19m) Promises: Through Congress (Trevor Tweeten, 2021, 49m) a still place (Christopher Makoto Yogi, 2020, 66m) Sudesha (Yugantar, 1983, 34m) In addition, there are several segments extracted from anthology films, where the enclosing film has an IMDb page but not the segment: Black Soil, Green Grass (Daniel Patrick Carbone segment from "Collective: Unconscious," 2016, 18m) First Day Out (Josephine Decker segment from "Collective: Unconscious," 2016, 10m) En passant (Atom Egoyan segment from "Montréal Vu Par...," 1991, 19m) Artaud Double Bill (Atom Egoyan segment from "To Each His Own Cinema," 2007, 3m) India (Mira Nair segment from "11'09"01 - September 11," 2002, 12m) How Can It Be? (Mira Nair segment from "8," 2008, 10m) The Rose of Manila (Alex Westfall segment from "Who Will Start Another Fire," 2021, 12m) Beemus, It'll End in Tears (Lauren Wolkstein segment from "Collective: Unconscious," 2016, 12m) The films are essentially alphabetized by director, though there are a few glitches due to the Criterion site's own quirks. Like with the ordering of multiple director credits for a single film. Part 2: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/the+criterion+channel+part+2/ebbywebby/
