1001 Music Videos You Must See Before You Die
Favs/dislikes: 6:0. Unofficial list and a personal and ongoing project that showcases the evolution of the medium from the early 60's to the present day. The list is divided in 2 halves: 20th century (1-501) & 21st century (502-1001) with a breakdown by chapters/decades. Includes curated selections from several lists (editorial, awards, etc..). Notes and rules:Televised, staged live performances (with/out audiences), choreographed performances in films and MV with heavy footage from other sources (such as movie scenes) will be dismissed as well as music videos made several years after the song's release. No more than 20 MV's per year and no more than 2 MV's per artist in the same year. Warning: This list contains expressions and themes which may be considered outdated, however they're still included to preserve the historical context and to respect the creator's original vision. Some content may be inappropriate for children and/or triggering for certain people. Viewer discretion is advised. This is a dynamic list and may never be able to satisfy particular standards for completeness but if you decide to partake on this journey, I hope you have as much fun as I'm having compiling this list. Some tweaks to the list can be made during the process. Click here if you're having trouble finding a music video! Favs/dislikes: 13:1. Philip Brophy's book provides a soundmap to a hundred films that engage the ears. Film Comment's 101 Film Score Milestones
Favs/dislikes: 9:0. This Essential List of 101 Great Film Score Milestones (in chronological order) from 1933-2001 was compiled by John Caps in the November-December 2003 issue of Film Comment magazine in an article titled "Soundtracks 101 – Essential Movie Music: A Listener's Guide." The article also provided a brief history of film music in the introduction and further details on each of the choices. Facts and Commentary About the List: •The list was created to mark the 70th anniversary of the film score in 2003. • The list consisted of composed instrumental film scores (whether symphonic or electronic, classical or pop in style), not film musicals or song scores, from American and British films (English-language films). •These were films from the talkie era onwards (and recognizing that silent films were never silent). •The quality of a film often has nothing to do with the rating of its film score, e.g., Taras Bulba (1962, Waxman). •According to the author, the list was "representative rather than exhaustive; all of the scores in the list "contribute something memorable, something personal, to their films - and communicate one step further to us as music." •Predictably, one-fourth of the list was taken by the six giants of the Golden Age (Steiner, Waxman, Korngold, Newman, Rozsa, Herrmann). Yet the author also recognized some of the great, but seemingly forgotten, figures of the recent past: Laurence Rosenthal, Richard Rodney Bennett, Dave Grusin, David Shire, and Basil Poledouris. -

Paste's 50 Best Movie Soundtracks
Favs/dislikes: 3:0. Published April 2016 The key to a great musical accompaniment in a film is imperceptibility. When a song is so perfect for a movie moment, audiences won’t even notice it until the scene has already begun. The fit is intuitive. But listening back to a soundtrack after seeing a movie immediately can create a different experience. The melodies and lyrics conjure visual memories from those other stories. Sometimes, though, a soundtrack stands on its own, independent of the film that united those individual tracks. Whatever the situation, movie soundtracks offer essential cultural contributions to both movies and music, and we’ve rounded up the 50 best of all time. -
Pitchfork’s 50 Best Movie Scores of All Time (2019)
Favs/dislikes: 0:0. We’re defining scores as original music composed for a film, with recurring motifs and almost always without vocals. This type of work is often the result of a collaboration between a composer and director, and created in tandem with a movie to steadily enhance the narrative onscreen. Put another way: Whereas a soundtrack highlights moments of a movie, a score blankets the entire film. (We’re only looking at narrative films in this list; we are not including documentaries.) -
Time Out London 50 Greatest Music Films
Favs/dislikes: 10:0. From Wagner to Elvis, a multitude of musicians have stepped out of the studio and on to the big screen – often, it must be said, to disastrous effect. CAKE Songs In Film & TV
Favs/dislikes: 1:0. CAKE are an alternative/pop/rock/country/everything band from Sacramento, CA known for their hits "The Distance," "Rock'n'Roll Lifestyle," "Never There" and "Short Skirt/Long Jacket," among others. They are also renowned for the knack of not just covering, but redefining and - arguably - improving upon a wide variety of well-established songs with their unique style, including Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" and The Muppets song "Mahna Mahna." Filmmakers have taken note of CAKE's one-of-a-kind sound and have featured many of their songs in movies and television episodes. In WALTZ WITH BASHIR's case, there is actually a cover of an original CAKE song, which is a welcome and unusual occurance. -
