Anyone know of a horror movie before 2000 that had a scene in it where a character sticks their hand down a garbage disposal, starts to scream, pulls out a bloody stump, scaring the lady (who I believe was the main character), then reveals it is fake and that he slipped on the glove when he put his hand in.

I think he loses said hand later and that it was a sequel to a movie, but could be wrong.

My top picks:

20s- Nosferatu (millions of blind spots, however!)
30s- Bride of Frankenstein
40s- The Wolf Man (it's ok, and once again I have millions of blind spots)
50s- The Night of the Hunter (or Godzilla, if you don't class NotH as horror)
60s- Psycho
70s- Halloween
80s- Opera
90s- Gremlins 2
00s- Halloween II (Rob Zombie's stongest film so far -- high praise!)
2010s- The Innkeepers (Because I guess I'm the only person on this site who loathed Cabin in the Woods and Ti West is one of the most promising, single-minded directors working today)

I change my nomination for the 60's. Hitchcocks Psycho is great but after having reseen Bergman's The Virgin Spring (Jungfrukällan) Psycho is out :)

Ok here is my list...(you can see more movies at our top 666 horror movie list as well). Shorts were included when needed.

1890's - LE MANOIR DU DIABLE
Often considered the first horror short ever.
RUNNER UP - Le Diable Au Convent

1900's - LA MAISON ENSORCELEE
Legitimately scary! Chomon at his best.
RUNNERS UP - Le Spectre Rouge, Le Chaudron Infernal

1910's - L'INFERNO
Despite classification this is the scariest kind of horror movie. Amazing effects for it's day as well.
RUNNERS UP - Frankenstein, Eerie Tales, Der Student Von Prag

1920's - NOSFERATU
Brimming with true occult horror.
RUNNERS UP - Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Skeleton Dance

1930's - DRACULA
Arguably the most iconic performance of the 20th century. Bela Lugosi is Dracula.
RUNNERS UP - King Kong, Freaks, Bride of Frankenstein

1940's - DEAD OF NIGHT
This movie probably established more horror staples than any other.
RUNNERS UP - Le Belle et la Bete, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, And Then There Were None, Cat People

1950's - GOJIRA
The Schindler's List of horror movies. Only watch the Japanese version. Heartbreaking.
RUNNERS UP - Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Ugetsu Monogatari, Les Diaboliques

1960's - PEEPING TOM
Peeping Tom is the ultimate movie questioning why we watch horror movies.
RUNNERS UP - Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, Hour of the Wolf

1970's - THE EXORCIST
Greatest horror movie period. Question is will we ever top it?
RUNNERS UP - Dawn of the Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Suspiria

1980's - THE SHINING
What more can be said? Heeeerrree's Johnny!
RUNNERS UP - The Fly, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Thing

1990's - DEAD ALIVE
The goriest film ever. Yet funny as hell!
RUNNER'S UP - Silence of the Lambs, Dracula, In the Mouth of Madness

2000s - MARTYRS
Goes where few horror movies are willing to go; FX and psychological wise.
RUNNER'S UP - Battle Royale, Devil's Rejects, Imprint

2010 (so far) - CABIN IN THE WOODS
Mocks horror conventions while delivering a great horror movie at the same time.
RUNNER'S UP - Stake Land, The Woman

Thanks for the tips. I haven't seen any of those that you've mentioned. I've seen a ridiculus amount of horror movies in my life, but whenever I select something to see its either "classical" (20s - 30s) or "modern" (70s onwards). I think I've only seen around a dozen from the 40s and 60s and slightly more than 20 from the 50s (especially horror/science fiction hybrids). I chose Jurrasic Park from the 90s because it had such a big impact on me when I saw it in the cinema when I was 12 years old (and then I thought the T-rex was really scary), and I think it qualifies as a monster movie which usually is considered to be a sub-genre of horror, but I understand the objection as it probably belongs more to the genres of adventure and family. If it is not counted - then I will substitute it with Candyman (1992), another of my top favourites. I suddenly remembered a good 40s horror movie I've seen, the Wolf Man :-) I will update my list to reflect that.

I remember submitting my list some time ago, but the message disappeared. Whatever, I'll have to watch some more horrors before re-submitting my choices, especially from the '90s and the '00s.

@Zeltaebar: It seems you haven't seen that many horror films from the '40s or '60s. You could try The Uninvited, I Walked with a Zombie and Dead of Night (and of those acclaimed horror films that I haven't seen, Cat People and Vredens dag). From '60s horror I'd recommend Onibaba, The Innocents and Peeping Tom among others. You have probably already heard of most of those movies, but I'd recommend watching at least some of those before declaring that those decades were bad for horror. Also, I wouldn't call Jurassic Park or The Night of a Hunter horror films, although they're both on the Top 500 Horror Movies list for some reason.

I've now updated my list a bit, and her it is:

20s - The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
30s - Frankenstein / Bride of Frankenstein (difficult to choose between these great classics).
40s - The Wolf Man (I haven't seen many from this decade)
50s - The Night of the Hunter (if considered a horror, if not, then Gojira).
60s - Dracula: Prince of Darkness (I haven't seen many from this decade)
70s - Jaws (close call with Dawn of the Dead)
80s - Re-Animator (close call with Aliens and The Shining)
90s - Jurassic Park (if counted as a horror, if not then Candyman)
00s - Shaun of the Dead
10s - Cabin in the Woods

Horror films for young teens. The Amazing Mr Blunden (1972) sticks out in my mind as making a big impression on me when I was a kid. Sort of hammer horror for kids!

Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Coraline, Little Shop of Horrors, The Frightners, The Birds...plenty to go at

20's F. W. Murnau's Faust, same aesthetics as nosferatu, but a more powerful movie.

30's is hard due to the problem of classifing movies within the horror genre. Fritz Langs masterpeice "M" is occasionaly classified as a horror film, which would give it the number one spot for the decade. Having to choose a more proper horror movie I would say Vampyr - Der Traum des Allan Grey by Carl Theodor Dreyer.

40's once again the IMDB classic Horror board which makes the top 500 horror film list includes a movie not usually considered a horror film, "La Belle et La Bête" by J. Cocteau. Otherwise Cat people.

50's Gojira (1954) by Ishiro Honda

60's Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960)

70's The Wicker Man by Robin Hardy (Lee ftw!!!)

80's Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" the greatest horror movie yet to have been made.

90's The Ninth Gate (1999) by Roman Polanski

00's tie between Alejandro Amenabar's The Others (2001) and Thomas Alfredssons Låt den rätte komma in (2008)

I don't consider it fair to select a movie from the current decade, but one of the best so far is I saw the Devil

The 40's and the 70's-80's were really hard (for different reasons of course as mentioned).
I added the 1910's on the list because we have a serious contestant...
10’s – Frankenstein (1910) It’s a short film but a great one
20's - Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)
30's – Dracula (1931) cause Bela Lugosi’s undead
40's – Cat people (1941)
50's - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
60's - Night of the Living Dead (1968)
70's - The Exorcist (1973)
80's - A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
90's - Braindead a.k.a. Dead Alive (1992)
2000's - Låt den Rätte Komma In a.k.a. Let the Right One In (2008)
2010's - Akmareul Boatda a.k.a. I Saw the Devil (2010)

Tricky this.... at this particular moment I'd go with the following...

1920s - The Man Who Laughs (1928) or Haxan (1922)
1930s - Freaks (1932)
1940s - n/a
1950s - Les Diaboliques (1955)
1960s - The Haunting (1963)
1970s - The Exorcist (1973)
1980s - The Thing (1982) or The Shining (1980)
1990s - The Blair Witch Project (1999)
2000s - The Devil's Backbone (2001)
2010s - n/a

I struggled to find a favourite and worthy inclusion from the 40s and this decade so far - the 90s were pretty weak as well (I'd have said The Silence of the Lambs, but I don't honestly think it qualifies) - but like mightysparks found an abundance of favourites in the 80s, so many great films. I took the liberty of adding a couple of close calls elsewhere to make up my 10 choices.

Hello Friends. I wanted to get an idea of your favorite horror movies by decade. It's easy to come up with your top 10 horror movies of all time, but if you had to pick one from each decade, what would they be? We'll go from the 1920's-2010's. I grew up in the 80's and 90's, so for me the 70's-90's picks were tough. Lots of classics from those decades...and a lot of cheesy ones too...:P Notice how my last two picks are non-English speaking films. I think American horror movies have been on the decline the last couple of decades. Too many remakes and sequels, not enough scare. Here's my list:

20's - Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)
30's - Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
40's - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941)
50's - Dracula a.k.a. Horror of Dracula (1958)
60's - Night of the Living Dead (1968)
70's - The Exorcist (1973)
80's - Evil Dead II (1987)
90's - Braindead a.k.a. Dead Alive (1992)
2000's - Låt den Rätte Komma In a.k.a. Let the Right One In (2008)
2010's - Akmareul Boatda a.k.a. I Saw the Devil (2010)
