Nine shortlisted contenders were revealed a week before the announcement of the Oscar nominations.[2] The submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2015 and 30 September 2016. The deadline for submissions is 3 October 2016,[3] with the Academy announcing a list of eligible films later that month. Nine finalists from among the dozens of entries will be shortlisted on 17 January 2017, with the final five nominees being announced on 24 January 2017.[4] The winner will be announced at the Oscar ceremony on 26 February 2017.[4]
