Essential Japanese New Wave Movies
Favs/dislikes: 5:0. Out of all the “new waves” that sprung up around the world in the wake of France’s revolutionary Nouvelle Vague in the 1960s, perhaps none was as explosive — politically, morally and aesthetically — and offered such a thorough repudiation of what had come before, as Japan’s Nuberu Bagu. While Nagisa Oshima and Shohei Imamura remain far and away the best-known directors associated with this movement, many other filmmakers have been unfairly lurking in their shadows for too long. I therefore limited myself to one title per director in this list of what I consider a dozen essential Japanese New Wave movies. -

Danny Elfman Soundtracks
Favs/dislikes: 5:0. For two decades, Danny Elfman has masterfully scored the darker side of Hollywood. From monsters to super heros, innocence to malevolence, Elfman adds a mystical touch that distinguishes him from other newcomers of the 1980's and early 1990's. Born into a family of artists, Elfman has been known the longest as a flamboyant member of the rock band "Oingo Boingo," to which he belonged from 1979 to 1995. Mostly due to his connection with director Tim Burton, Elfman experimented in film scoring in the mid-1980's. After several blockbuster hits both on the screen and in record stores, Elfman established himself as a renegade personality in Hollywood's otherwise conservative film scoring community. -
Linda Darnell Filmography
Favs/dislikes: 3:1. Born Monetta Eloyse Darnell in Dallas, Texas, Linda signed a film contract with Fox at the age of 15 and made her debut in Hotel For Women in 1939. She starred in four movies with Tyrone Power, including The Mark of Zorro and Blood and Sand. Later in the 1940s, Linda achieved renewed success in films such as Summer Storm, Hangover Square, Fallen Angel and My Darling Clementine, following a change in type and a new screen image as a pin-up girl. She was critically acclaimed for her roles in films such as Unfaithfully Yours, A Letter to Three Wives and No Way Out. Released from her Fox contract in 1952 at the age of 29, Linda took movie roles in Italy and worked on the stage and in television. She died in 1965 at the age of 41 in a house fire, shortly after making her first movie in seven years, Black Spurs. -
