Rohit K. Dasgupta & Sangeeta Datta's 100 Essential Indian Films
Favs/dislikes: 7:0. Although the motion picture industry in India is one of the oldest and largest in the world—with literally thousands of productions released each year—films from that country have not been as well received as those from other countries. Known for their impressive musical numbers, melodramatic plots, and nationally beloved stars, Indian films have long been ignored by the West but are now at the forefront of cinema studies. In 100 Essential Indian Films, Rohit K. Dasgupta and Sangeeta Datta identify and discuss significant works produced since the 1930s. Examining the output of different regional film industries throughout India, this volume offers a balance of box-office blockbusters, critical successes, and less-recognized cult classics. While many studies of Indian films focus on a single language’s contributions, this encyclopedia offers a comprehensive guide to productions from across the country in various languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Assamese, Punjabi, Marathi, and English. 100 Essential Indian Films is an engaging volume that will appeal to both cinema scholars and those looking for an introduction to a vital component of world cinema. The movies are ordered alphabetically by their english title. -

Asia Shock: Horror and Dark Cinema from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand
Favs/dislikes: 57:0. A viewer's guide to accompany the book of the same name by Patrick Galloway. The list features every title reviewed in the book, in the order in which they appear. Please note: Because Galloway includes a review of the American remake of Ringu, I have included it on the list, even though it is obviously not an Asian movie. -
BFI's 50 Essential South Asian Films
Favs/dislikes: 27:0. "This list of films is supposed to be a representative sample of the kinds of films that are produced and consumed in South Asia and elsewhere. It formed part of bfi's South Asian Cinema 2002 programme designed to present to the British public for the first time the immense diversity of South Asian cinema." This is the list that was compiled by experts. BFI also ran a user poll. The list is divided into 5 sections: 1-10: Bangladeshi 11-20: Diaspora 21-30: Indian 31-40: Pakistani 41-50: Sri Lankan -
Cinemaya's Greatest Asian Films
Favs/dislikes: 28:0. In 1998, Cinemaya asked 34 critics (mostly Asian critics) to list their 10 favorite Asian films. Cinemaya published all of these lists in issue #41 of the magazine. #1 Tokyo Story appeared on 20 of the lists. This is a list of films that appeared on at least 2 lists. See this spreadsheet for vote counts. 6 of the critics listed "The Apu Trilogy" without specifying an individual film, so I counted each trilogy vote as a vote for all 3 films. You can see some of the top 10 lists in this Google book preview. -
