8. Mike Leigh Films's icon

Mike Leigh Films

Favs/dislikes: 32:0. All the films (and tv movies) of the great English director Mike Leigh. I'd say he's my favourite director, I just have a strong personal connection with so many of his films and characters. I've seen all his features except Bleak Moments, his debut. Look out for his next feature called Mr. Turner, due for release in 2014. Starring long term collaborator and fantastic actor, Timothy Spall in the title role.
9. Monty's Top Samurai Movies's icon

Monty's Top Samurai Movies

Favs/dislikes: 71:9. The list before your is the fruit of many years of reading about and watching samurai cinema. Moreover, as my main focus is on jidai-geki (i.e. Japanese period films set before 1868), and more specifically chanbara or sword fighting films, no crazy robot samurai anime will ever find its way here. The list will be expanded as I come across new goodies. All the titles in the list are available with English subs. Apart from the first ten titles, this list is unranked. Hiroshi Inagaki's Miyamoto Musashi trilogy is not included here as I find Tomu Uchida's six part treatment of the same story vastly superior. In case anyone misses the Zatoichi films here, it's because they fall loosely into the genre of ninkyo-eiga. The one film in this great series I have included is that in which Zatoichi has this epic showdown against a samurai.

13. New Hollywood - The American New Wave's icon

New Hollywood - The American New Wave

Favs/dislikes: 110:0. The most notable films from an exceptional era -- from Bonnie and Clyde (1967) to Heaven's Gate (1980). I've decided to tighten up my criteria for this list. In order to qualify: 1. The movie must have been made via a major American studio (or at least financed by); 2. and yet without studio interference; 3. between the years 1967 and 1980; 4. capture a certain grittiness, authenticity, and spirit of the times. You'll notice that certain directors (Woody Allen, John Cassavetes, Stanley Kubrick, etc.) do not appear on this list, since they worked outside of the studio system.

BFI Flipside

Favs/dislikes: 10:1. Hailed by cult film critic Kim Newman as “Britain's most out-there DVD label”, the Flipside is dedicated to unearthing the alternative history of British cinema. To date, our collection includes over 60 previously-unreleased features and short films by such celebrated filmmakers as Richard Lester and Guy Hamilton, and rediscovers brilliant performances from John Hurt, Oliver Reed, Jane Asher and many more.

19. The DPP 39 (UK Video Nasties)'s icon

The DPP 39 (UK Video Nasties)

Favs/dislikes: 23:0. These are the 39 controversial films banned from sale in the UK by the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) under the Video Recordings Act of 1984. The films were banned in response to a right-wing media fury spearheaded by the campaigner Mary Whitehouse (1910-2001) who popularised Sunday Times journalist Peter Chippendale's phrase "Video Nasty" despite never having watched any of the films themselves. In the years that followed, several of these movies were released either cut or uncut, whilst the others have either not been granted a certificate; or no distributor has since requested one. Not included here are: - films originally banned at the same time as the Video Nasties, but never prosecuted, such as The Evil Dead. - films often believed to have been part of the DPP 39, including A Clockwork Orange, The Exorcist, Straw Dogs, Ilsa She-Wolf of the SS and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre - all of which were unavailable in the UK for other reasons. The DPP 39 list is a matter of quintessential bad taste. In most cases, don't expect great movies, but check out what the fuss was all about!
