Wow 24/7 11 under-appreciated Scottish films you need to see
Favs/dislikes: 1:0. While Scotland on screen was once a heather-strewn land populated by kilted men called Angus and red-haired lassies called Flora, films like Local Hero, Gregory’s Girl and Trainspotting gave us a much more believable version of Scottish life and identity. A new generation of homegrown film-making talent – bolstered by several English directors who came north – has helped to restore a vitality and often brutal realism to Scottish cinema. Let’s just forget about Braveheart and Rob Roy for the time being. Instead, here are eleven under-appreciated Scottish films you need to add to your DVD shelf, if you haven’t already. -
Whatculture.com's 18 Greatest Scottish Films
Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Whilst Braveheart is clearly the film that most people worldwide would immediately associate with Scotland, Mel Gibson's William Wallace epic does not find its way onto this list due to it it being entirely financed by American money, written and directed by an Australian, produced by an American and largely shot in Ireland. Aside from that it is also nice to take the opportunity to shine a light on those great Scottish films that aren't Braveheart, and actually have a claim to being Scottish cultural products outside the setting for the story. Scotland may have given cinema a James Bond and an Obi Wan Kenobi but as you will see it has also given us some of the greatest and uncompromising British films, which cast a light on the socio-political issues that pervade this country. It isn't all doom and gloom though, in addition to having a social conscience Scotland also knows how to have a laugh and entertain, so in amongst the weightier material you'll find some of the funniest and heartwarming films this island has ever produced. -

The List Magazine's Best Scottish Films
Favs/dislikes: 10:0. List published in 2004. These films (Bill Douglas trilogy counting as one) were put forward for the public to vote on and a list of the five films with the most votes was published. The rest of the list is unranked. "We've given ourselves a broad definition of what makes a film 'Scottish'. A film made in Scotland by Scots, obviously. But also a film made in Scotland by a foreigner. Dane Lars von Trier's Breaking the Waves fits into this category. Our definition is even broad enough to include Braveheart (Australian star and director, American money, even Ireland doubling as Stirling! But a blockbuster about a Scottish folk hero and a film that employed nearly every Scottish actor-except Billy Connolly, apparently). Getting the picture?" -
