Wired's The Best Sci-fi Movies Everyone Should Watch Once

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Aliens, astronauts, time travel – you name it, there’s a dazzling sci-fi film about it. That makes compiling a list of the best sci-fi nigh on impossible. For one, where do you start? To understand where sci-fi films came from, you need to head back to the dawn of the cinema age. Right at the start of it all, Metropolis, released in 1927, used groundbreaking visuals to create a reference point for all future urban dystopias – it’s no fluke, for example, that the aesthetic of Blade Runner bares more than a passing resemblance to Fritz Lang’s prophetic urban hell-scape. Then along came War of the Worlds (1953), a gripping tale of alien invasion adapted from H.G. Wells’ classic novel. In 1964, Dr. Strangelove did more than most films before or since to ossify the fear of a nuclear holocaust. Then, in 1968, perhaps the most influential sci-fi film of them all: 2001: A Space Odyssey. Say no more. This is Wired's ever evolving selection of the sci-fi movies everyone should watch, starting with something a little obscure but hugely influential.

TimeOut's The 50 Best Romcoms of All Time (feb 2020 edition)

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. Love – it’s a funny old game. Or at least it is in these films. Here's Time Out's definitive list of the 50 best romcoms. Like cargo pants and saying ‘as if!’ to people, romcoms were huge in the ’90s, but fell sadly out of fashion in the 2010s. Now, though, that drought looks to be over. Thanks in part to Netflix, we’re in the middle of a romcom revival, with films like ‘Always Be My Maybe’ and ‘Set It Up’ inspiring mainstream Hollywood to start making romantic comedies again. From Nora Ephron classics to Richard Curtis movies that are so-very-British (and so-very-funny), we’ve put together 50 of the most hilarious romantic comedies and bittersweet romances that’ll leave a lump in your throat and tears rolling down your cheeks.
  6. The Vulture's The 30 Best Superhero Movies Since Blade's icon

The Vulture's The 30 Best Superhero Movies Since Blade

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. The 30 best superhero movies since Blade kicked off their modern renaissance. Criteria for what constitutes a superhero movie were as follows: It must (a) be about a do-gooder or group of do-gooders who have superhuman abilities or are more skilled at crime-fighting than any human possibly could be (Batman and the Punisher being examples of the latter); (b) be set primarily on Earth, which excludes sci-fi fantasias like Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy, as both are set in galaxies where superhuman abilities are commonplace; and (c) have been released theatrically. There’s also a certain amount of Potter Stewart–esque logic here: You know a superhero when you see one.
  7. The End of Cinema's 30 Essential Wuxia Films's icon

The End of Cinema's 30 Essential Wuxia Films

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. "With the highly-anticipated release of two King Hu masterpieces on home video by the Masters of Cinema organization, as well as the critical success of Hou Hsiao-hsien’s The Assassin last year, it seems like the wuxia film is making some inroads into the Western critical consciousness. So I thought I’d put together a guide to some of the essential films of the genre. The Chinese martial arts movie is generally split into two primary subgeneres: the kung fu film and the wuxia film. The kung fu film is newer and focuses primarily on hand-to-hand combat, it’s steeped in traditional fighting forms and there’s a general emphasis on the physical skill of the performer: special effects are generally disdained. Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan are its most famous practitioners and Lau Kar-leung its most important director. Wuxia is a much older form, based ultimately in the long tradition of Chinese adventure literature, in classic novels such as The Water Margin or Journey to the West, or more contemporary works by authors like Louis Cha and Gu Long. Its heroes follow a very specific code of honor as they navigate the jianghu, an underworld of outlaws and bandits outside the normal streams of civilization. Wuxia films often incorporate fantasy elements, using special effects to allow their heroes to fly, shoot concentrated chi energy out of their hands (or eyes) and in other ways violate the laws of physics. Strictly speaking, wuxia should probably be confined to stories of code-following traveling knights-errant, but genres are a fluid and conventional thing, especially in Hong Kong, where films regularly mash together comedy, action, romance, melodrama and horror elements into a single impure whole, and as such, stark lines are difficult to draw. King Hu and Tsui Hark are the essential wuxia directors, and Jet Li, Ti Lung and Jimmy Wang Yu the genre’s greatest stars. The following is a list of 30 of the genre’s highlights, taking a reasonably expansive view of generic boundaries and arranged in chronological order." There are 32 movies on the list, cause Legend of the Mountain and Raining in the Mountain plus Hero and House of Flying Daggers are mentioned together.

Screen Crush's The Best Superhero Movies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. Bear in mind, what follows are what one dork considers the best superhero movies, not necessarily or exclusively the best comic-book movies. There are some very good superhero movies that aren’t based on comics. As far what makes a “superhero movie” if not a connection to a superhero comic, it’s kind of a you-know-it-when-you-see-it type situation. But if the main character of your movie dresses in a costume (particularly if the costume has a mask and a cape), or gains super powers of some kind as part of a quest to save the world from evildoers, you’re on the right track. Without further ado, here’s our picks for the 25 best superhero movies

  17. IGN's Top 25 Best Superhero Movies's icon

IGN's Top 25 Best Superhero Movies

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. "It is time once again, in this post-Infinity Saga world, to narrow down the top 25 best superhero films of all time. With the MCU heading into a new phase, the 20th Century Fox Marvel properties like X-Men and Fantastic Four on the verge of merging with the broader Marvel Studios world, DC's properties hitting new creative heights, and a swath of "indie" comics titles also getting adapted, the superhero movie genre clearly isn't going anywhere any time soon. A few notes on this update to this list: Whereas in the past we've focused only on films based on actual comics, this time around we've decided that original characters created for the big screen are also eligible (you're welcome, The Incredibles fans!). Also, this list features superhero-based movies only. Sorry, no Road to Perdition or Ghost World or a handful of other excellent movies that happen to have been notable comics first. We love those flicks, but you kind of have to have superpowers (or a pretty dope costume) to hang in this 25. The IGN Entertainment team voted on this list, resulting in a few changes since our last update to it in 2018. As for the movie that have been added or removed to this list since our last update, Marvel did well with several new titles, including Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War, Thor: Ragnarok, the Sony-Marvel animated hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and the classic Wesley Snipes-starring Blade. The rule change allowing original characters created for a movie brings Unbreakable and The Incredibles into the top 25. And then V himself also sneaks onto the list with V for Vendetta. As for what has been cut from the 2018 list, the original Hellboy, Watchmen, Kick-Ass, The Crow, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, KIngsman: The Secret Service, and Captain America: Civil War are all out. So quite a bit of churn there. All that said, let's dig into brainwashed super-soldiers, foul-mouthed invulnerable vigilantes, ragtag crews of galactic scavengers, a couple of Spider-Men, several Batmen, and more!"
