All Shorts on iCM Lists

Favs/dislikes: 355:9. These are all of the shorts on at least 1 official iCM list (not counting the IMDb list), sorted by runtime. Shorts with unknown runtimes are listed at the bottom. 2. Top 250 Most-Acclaimed Short Films of All Time's icon

Top 250 Most-Acclaimed Short Films of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 106:1. I compiled this list from many different polls, lists, and awards, using a weighted point system to rank the shorts. I'm defining short as any film with a runtime of 45 minutes or less. This list focuses more on animation than the Brief Encounters list. It includes many acclaimed animated shorts which are missing from Brief Encounters, most notably The Man Who Planted Trees and Ruka. Missing from IMDb: The Magic Fox (1982) (it would've been ranked #132)
  3. Harvard University's Suggested Film Viewing List: Experimental/Avant-garde/Underground Films (2012)'s icon

Favs/dislikes: 105:3. This list is "an educational resource that offers guidance and encouragement as students seek to find points of orientation within the vast history of film and video." It is not a list of the best films of all time. Rather, it reflects a variety of criteria. The list is divided into 5 sections: I. This section focuses mostly on short films. Only 8 of them are feature-length. 3 of the list items are "A ___ cartoon" (Roadrunner, Tom and Jerry, Woody Woodpecker). This means you have to watch at least one, but it's not important which one. On this list I included only the most acclaimed cartoon from each series. The list includes only the "Mirror People" segment of Fantastic Animation Festival.

TIFF also made a list of the best films of the 1990s.

You can see a longer list and rankings for each year at the list source.

  16. All Films on iCM Lists That You Can Watch on IMDb's icon

All Films on iCM Lists That You Can Watch on IMDb

Favs/dislikes: 39:0. You can watch all of these films for free by clicking the "Watch It" or "Watch Now" link on the IMDb page. Some of the films are only available in certain countries (e.g. the ones hosted on Hulu), so if you don't live in one of those countries then you won't see the link. Although some of the films are hosted on archive.org, this list does not include all of the films on archive.org. It only includes the ones that are linked from IMDb.

  18. Royal Film Archive of Belgium's Most Important and Misappreciated American Films's icon

Royal Film Archive of Belgium's Most Important and Misappreciated American Films

Favs/dislikes: 37:1. In 1977, the Royal Film Archive of Belgium sent out questionnaires to film experts from 22 countries in order to compile an extensive list of important American films. 203 people participated (116 Americans and 87 non-Americans). Each participant compiled two lists, a list of the most important films (limited to 30 titles) and a list of misappreciated films (not limited in number). The final list is sorted by number of votes (including both important and misappreciated votes). The book lists all 2327 films that received at least 1 vote. This list includes the films that received at least 5 votes. One of the list entries is "Songs" which includes 25 films, so I included only the first one.

See the list source for an extended list and the point totals for each film.

    iCheckMovies' Most Favorite Horror Films

Favs/dislikes: 30:0. These are iCheckMovies' favorite horror films, calculated using this formula: favorites / (checks+75) This list includes horror shorts. I used IMDb to determine which films are horror, so there might be some strange inclusions and omissions. Last updated: October 5, 2012
  24. Laputa Animation Festival's 150 Best Animations of All Time (modified version)'s icon

Laputa Animation Festival's 150 Best Animations of All Time (modified version)

Favs/dislikes: 29:0. At the 2003 Laputa Animation Festival, 140 animation artists and film critics from around the world listed their 20 favorite animations. They used these lists to create a top 150 list and published the list in a book. This is not exactly the same as the original list because I made a few changes. The original list includes series of shorts (some of which include more than 100 shorts). Each short is listed separately on IMDb. I'm including only the most acclaimed short from each series (or the 1st short if they are equally acclaimed). I'm including the 1980 version of The King and the Mockingbird because it's the complete version of the film (the book specifies the original version, but I'm guessing that both versions received votes and then they combined them). The Overcoat (Shinel) is an unfinished film. 25. The World History of Animation: Time Line's icon

The World History of Animation: Time Line

Favs/dislikes: 29:0. This list is from Stephen Cavalier's book The World History of Animation (2011). The book starts with an introduction and brief histories of world animation, with a list of key films for each continent. The rest of the book is a chronological time line of films, with information about each film as well as biographies and explanations of animation techniques. This is the chronological time line. I'm including only the films that have their own section, not all of the films mentioned within the text. For series of shorts, I included only the 1st from each series.
