  1. The Automobile in Cinema's icon

    The Automobile in Cinema

Favs/dislikes: 13:0. An ode to the automobile (and its 2-wheeled brethren) in cinema. Speeding car chases through city traffic, engines revving aggressively, the squeal of whitewalls on the streets of 1940s Southern California. Cars give us cinematic insight into the human spirit. They can be a humble daily driver, a means of getting from point A to B. They can be an angry pulsing machine, barely gripping the road and containing the overwhelming mechanical forces asked of them. They be perpetually on the verge of breakdown, relying on careful cajoling to continue their labors. They are an extension of their driver and an entity unto themselves.
  2. The Dissolve's "The 30 Best American Independent Horror Films"'s icon

The Dissolve's "The 30 Best American Independent Horror Films"

Favs/dislikes: 12:0. "From independent professional producers like Roger Corman to intrepid first-timers (and sometimes only-timers) assembling a small crew and making a movie on their own terms, American independent filmmaking has a long, honorable tradition of low-budget scares. In time for Halloween and in conjunction with a month devoted to American independent horror, The Dissolve decided to determine the 30 best examples of this tradition. Some are clever, some scary, some unpredictable; most are some combination of all three. That’s what happens when a genre that values the bizarre finds filmmakers forced by limited resources to get imaginative." - Noel Murray, Keith Phipps, Nathan Rabin, Tasha Robinson, Matt Singer, Scott Tobias

    Coming of Age

Favs/dislikes: 8:0. Stories about growing up. Bildungsroman. Some are simple and sweet, others stunted, delayed, or disturbing. Sex, drugs, rock'n'roll, sports, war, divorce, religion, depression, punk, drought, graduation, lazy summers, first loves, death, puberty, domineering parents - these are the hazards and catalysts of change.

  7. Madonna-Whore Complex's icon

    Madonna-Whore Complex

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. A collection of old and new movies that address how women (and their sexuality) can be either idolized or vilified, both extremes with the potential to harm. It's all about objectivization.

  10. Leftist Cinema's icon

    Leftist Cinema

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Films with an explicitly progressive political message have had an interesting history within the Hollywood system and internationally. Depending on the political climate of the time they can receive industry and even governmental support. During the 1930-50s European expats in Hollywood made several films with antifascist messages, for example. Only a few years later such films would be used against them as evidence of their Communist ties during the Red Scare, leading to the Hollywood Blacklist Films covering progressive themes such as: * Class struggle * Labor / unions * Anti-fascism * Anti-racism * Feminism * LGBTQ rights * Environmentalism Not intended to be a conclusive list. Thanks to Karina Longworth of the You Must Remember This podcast for the history and recommendations from the Classic Hollywood period.
