The Criterion Channel (part 2)

Favs/dislikes: 18:0. DIRECTORS L-Z In two parts, this list includes all featured films streamable through the Criterion Channel. 3. Chaotic Cinema's icon

Chaotic Cinema

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. I came across an interesting, self-proclaimed Chaotic Cinema list on Letterboxd of over 2,600 surreal/experimental/cult/horror films and wanted to transport it here. But inputting all those films was an enormous task, and gigantic ICM lists are always so cumbersome to load and use. So, I compromised and only entered the films I haven't seen. Which initially amounted to just about half of them. This makes the list less useful to others, but it's certainly SOME use to other fans of this warped cinematic realm. If nothing else, you can gloat about whichever films you've seen and I haven't! Inputting this list also led to importing multiple films to the ICM database. But unfortunately, there was also a surprising number of films that don't even have IMDb pages: A Vessel, the Ideas Pass Through 2021 / AAA AAA 1978 / Artificial Light x20 1969 / Atomic Bombs on the Planet Earth 2012 / Avant Coureur/Raster Relief 1983 / Chasse des Touches 1959 / Cinema Is a Mosaic Made of Time 1984 / Circumcision of Participant Observation 2013 / Conditions 2014 / Dead Dance 2009 / Diignus Vindice Nodus 1982 / Double 2001, a.k.a. Bunshin / Earth Pulse 1975 / Embodiment of Darkness 2018 / Epiphany 1984 / Excavations 1979 / Forbidden Symmetries 2014 / Geflecht 1976 / General Motors 1976 / Gewebe 1976 / He Walked Away 2006 / Highbushes Burning 2018 / Hollis Well 2012 / Horror Film 1 1971 / I Am Making Art 1971 / I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art 1971 / Intercourse With... 1978 / Lanzarote 2014 / Levitation 1972 / Light of the Body 2004 / Love Reinvented 1979, a.k.a. L'Amour Réinventé / Magic Mirror 2013 / Measures of Volatility 1979 / Moonblack 1968 / My Very Beautiful Movie 1974 / Number Two 2019 / Paul Sharits Interview with Gerard O'Grady 1976 / Performance of Video Imaging Tools 1970-1978 (a compilation of 17 video clips by various directors) / Phenomenon 2019 / Pictures of the Lost 1978 / Precession of the Simulacra 1992 / Primarily Speaking 1983 / Primary Time 1974 / Quarry 2015 / R-G-B 1974 / Relation in Time 1977 / Reverberlin 2006 / Scan Processor Studies 1973 / Script 1974 / Set of Co-incidence 1974 / Songs for Synthesized Soprano 1990 / Spinout 1983 / Teaching a Plant the Alphabet 1972 / Ten Years in the Sun 2015 / The 92 Faces of Peter Greenaway 2002 / The Dream of the Little Dancing Men 1997 / The Extinct Suite 2017 / The Loner 1980 / The Matter Propounded, of Its Possibility and Impossibility, Treated in Four Parts 2011 / The Poacher Woman of the Montafon 2011 / The Seismic Form 2020 / Theme Song 1973 / U-Barn 1968 / Unbalance 2006 / Up to and Including Her Limits 1976 / Weird Weird Movie Kids Do Not Watch the Movie 2013 / Why Do Things Get in a Muddle? (Come On Petunia) 1984 / Wilderness Series 2016 I'm going to create IMDb pages for as many of these films as my patience allows -- we'll see how I do. I believe I'm up to 145 adds now. I'll delete titles from the above block of text as I add them to ICM. I continue to remove films that I see. The list initially was 1,108 films but is much smaller now. But there's an extra wrinkle: The Letterboxd user continues to expand the list, so I'm adding films as well as subtracting them. PS Two substantial misgivings about this list: 1) Too many trashy horror movies included, just because they're gory or shocking. 2) The list's creator has a creepy fetish about arty women in film. Especially Tilda Swinton -- he runs Facebook pages about her and apparently hoards hundreds of photos of her. And this kink infects the list, which has loads of marginal, female-directed films and, of course, extra Swinton films. He's fixated on Cate Blanchett too.
4. Experimental films streamable at lightcone.org's icon

Experimental films streamable at lightcone.org

Favs/dislikes: 5:0. The site actually has over 1,700 viewable clips, but many of them are incomplete samples or do not have corresponding IMDb pages. Other films did not have ICM pages until I imported them from IMDb to fill out this list. All but about a dozen of them are shorts. They're sorted by director rather than title. 5. Anthology films (with multiple directors)'s icon

Anthology films (with multiple directors)

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. A list of anthology films with separate segments directed by separate filmmakers. If you'd rather use the term "omnibus" or "portmanteau," be my guest.

Curiouser and Curiouser

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. My watchlist is limited to "must-see's." This secondary list is more like a casual scratchpad for unseen films of medium interest. In no order.
8. Ebbywebby's favorite unofficial checks's icon

Ebbywebby's favorite unofficial checks

Favs/dislikes: 7:2. I'll be adding more titles as time passes. Also subtracting some, based on either waning enthusiasm or a film's debut on an official list. See below to check out the abundant films that I've deleted for the latter reason. In fact, I've had to delete so many films that the remaining ones' dwindling quality has me debating whether this list is still worth sharing. ICM's bloated set of official lists now suggests there are over 17,000 essential, canonical films to see? Silly. I so wish I was more confident about the shorts I've included...I've checked off about 6,400 shorts on ICM and now really regret not taking notes on the best ones. I just don't remember all those blips of film footage well enough. Newly "official" films deleted during 2024: The World According to Garp During 2023: Morgiana, Saute ma Ville, The Sun's Burial, Deerskin, Images, Phase IV, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Mademoiselle, Asparagus During 2022: Jodorowsky's Dune, Mingus - Charlie Mingus 1968, Mandara, Uta, El Empleo, The Hand of God, The Power of the Dog, Johnny Corncob, Why Does Herr R. Tie Me Down!, Upstream Color, Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii, The Idle Class, Pay Day, Rachel Getting Married 2013: Laugh Clown Laugh, Dirty Pretty Things, Emak-Bakia, For Heaven's Sake, Blind Chance, West of Zanzibar, A Zed & Two Noughts, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Lisztomania, Steppenwolf, Made in Britain, After the Rehearsal, City of Women, Comfort & Joy, Hi Mom!, Intervista, Vicky Cristina Barcelona…. Strange but true: This may be only "favorite unofficial checks" list on ICM that does not contain any official checks.
9. Harold Lloyd filmography (complete?)'s icon

Harold Lloyd filmography (complete?)

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. ICM needed a Harold Lloyd filmography that included his massive output of shorts. His IMDB filmography is a little longer, because I chose not to include the appearances that were "rumored" or "unconfirmed." Over half of these films have zero checks, so I'm guessing they are lost. This website (https://haroldlloyd.us/the-films/the-state-of-the-lloyd-films/) seems to indicate as many as 71 of his films were destroyed in a catastrophic 1943 fire.

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. Mostly experimental shorts with minimal casts, yes.

<50

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. Favorite movies with under <50 checks. So many British films.
12. Les Blank Films's icon

Les Blank Films

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. This list has two sections. The first 43 titles are directed or co-directed by the late documentary filmmaker Les Blank (1935-2013). The remaining films are directed by his colleagues and are all featured on http://lesblank.com. Perhaps they're available on DVD through the site -- I'm not sure. Quite a few of these films are streamable via Kanopy and (for a price) Vimeo. This is a work in progress, because about 35 of the films don't even have IMDb pages. So I can't add them to ICM until/unless I create IMDb pages for them first. Not on IMDb: A Journey to the Butterflies (Bruce Pacho Lane) A Skirt Full of Butterflies (Maureen Gosling) Bamako Chic (Maureen Gosling) Carrousel Menagerie (Bruce Pacho Lane) Cheyanne Schatz (Pieter Van Deusen and Leah Miller) Cumbre Tajín (Bruce Pacho Lane) Down an Old Road (Chris Simon) Folktale From Two Lands (Pieter Van Deusen and Leah Miller) Friends (Pieter Van Deusen and Leah Miller) Homegrown Bounty (Gina Leibrecht) I Hear What You See (Chris Simon) Jaber (Alan Govenar) Little Willie Eason and His Talking Gospel Guitar (Alan Govenar) Mezcal (Bruce Pacho Lane) My Canyonlands (Chris Simon) Narco-Mania! (Bruce Pacho Lane) Netherby Naps (Pieter Van Deusen and Leah Miller) New York Is a Summer Festival (Pieter Van Deusen and Leah Miller) On Wayang: My Life With Shadows (Gina Leibrecht) Pancho Villa (Bruce Pacho Lane) Peace Corps: Colombia One (Bruce Pacho Lane) Percussion Sounds (Pieter Van Deusen and Leah Miller) Red Alexander (Chris Simon) Seven Second Love Affair (Robert Abel) String Sounds (Pieter Van Deusen and Leah Miller) The Language of the Seeds (Bruce Pacho Lane) The New Mexico Chile Film (Bruce Pacho Lane) The Rite of Spring (Pieter Van Deusen and Leah Miller) The Softball Umpire Film (Les Blank) The Story of Anna O: A Study on Hysteria (Terrell Seltzer) TV Tray (Harrod Blank) Zydeco (Nick Spitzer)
13. Favorite German films (?)'s icon

Favorite German films (?)

Favs/dislikes: 0:1. My ballot for the ICM forum poll. I'm doing this very quickly and impulsively, and thus feel rather sheepish about my list's accuracy. And I reeeeally need to see Kings of the Road, Faraway So Close!, The Marriage of Maria Braun and The Last Laugh again, because I saw them ages ago and remember them very poorly.
14. Favorite 1950s films's icon

Favorite 1950s films

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. for the forum poll
15. "Directed" by Andy Warhol's icon

"Directed" by Andy Warhol

Favs/dislikes: 1:1. Seemingly, many of Warhol's "screen tests" do not have IMDb pages, so those are unfortunately missing from this list. I also chose not to include "Flesh," "Trash," "Heat," "Bad" and the Frankenstein/Dracula films, even though Warhol's shadow somewhat hangs over them. (Arguably, those films are more essential than anything found on this list.)
16. Unseen, unofficial shorts on 17+ lists's icon

Unseen, unofficial shorts on 17+ lists

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. I work and work on reducing this list but it only gets larger. I've half given up. For awhile I looked for unseen shorts on 13+ lists, but a point came when too many lousy shorts were reaching that threshold. So I raised the bar to 14+. And later I raised it again, from 14+ lists to 15+. And then to 16+. And 17+. The list is still a mess. Too many forum-poll ballots and redundant lists of Oscar nominees have ruined the idea of "on many ICM lists = good film." And now an unwanted glut of "favorite music videos" lists wrecks it further, so I've just stopped checking music videos unless I perceive them as "art" rather than "a good song."
17. Official checks with unknown runtimes's icon

Official checks with unknown runtimes

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. For awhile, I've been on a peripheral quest to fill in the "unknown" runtime fields for all official-check films. With some help from others, I believe I've engineered close to 200 runtimes being added (not counting many other runtimes I've added for "unofficial" films). Usually, the process also involved submitting a runtime to IMDB first, so I'm conscientious about wanting to get the length exactly right using a credible Web resource (or hopefully, *more* than one to confirm). I share this list so others can message me if they have knowledge of these remaining films -- films for which I have either conflicting information, thin information or no information at all. Ideally, an officially cited length from some sort of catalog page (for instance, http://www.worldcat.org) seems more definitive than just quoting how long a possibly erratic torrent or YouTube video lasts, but I'll take what I can get. A few of the earliest shorts are problematic...shorts lasting under a minute seem to defy the update process. I note that three widely seen shorts from the 19th century get sifted to the top if you sort the list by runtime, even though their runtimes are listed as "unknown." Strange.
18. Jeff Keen filmography's icon

Jeff Keen filmography

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. Jeff Keen (1923-2012) was a dazzling DIY filmmaker that doesn't come up too often in discussions -- he doesn't have even one film that is an "official check." His films are generally wordless collages, mixing transformative, stop-motion animation (both drawn and created with objects) and live human mischief (his "casts" seem to be whoever showed up at that night's house party). The speed of his editing is delirious, to say the least. Just climb into a film and pray that you can hold on. He has obvious recurring influences, such as classic comic strips and '50s pulp films. and his films sometimes seem like sequences of old-fashioned, "Coming Soon!"-type movie trailers strung together. Some of them are more political, but the dominant mood is sheer hedonism, and brace yourself for copious, amateur nudity (more "free-spirited" than directly sexual). Exhilirating.
