1988 -- The Best Year for Comedies (Or: The Funniest Year in Movies)

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. Name one other year that has had this many great comedy films. You can't. 1988 was a huge year for comedies, both good and bad. Yes, we were punished with movies like "Earth Girls Are Easy," "High Spirits," "Johnny Be Good," "License to Drive," "Young Einstein," "Hot to Trot," "Moving," "Feds," "Twins," "Big Top Pee-Wee," "Crocodile Dundee 2," "Caddyshack 2," "Short Circuit 2," and "Police Academy 5." But... well... ok, maybe it was also the worst year for comedies. Whatever. So, it's a numbers game. And that means there was bound to be good stuff. And the good stuff was really, really good. So, without further ado, here are the 14 classic comedy films of 1988, the best year for comedies! (WAIT! There actually is some further ado. I wanted to send my apologies to "Scrooged," "Big Business" and "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka." They're nostalgic favorites of mine, but let's be real. They ain't that good. Ok, on with the show...)

    Sight & Sound's 50 best films of 2019

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. In a year in which the future of cinema – of independent filmmaking, and collective film-watching – seems more fraught than ever, our poll of 100 S&S contributors has produced a list of 50 outstanding reasons for movie watching. Here below the reflections of past masters jostle with bold experiments from new voices – capped by a triumphant top movie that finds its British female director both looking back and moving forward. In our January 2020 issue we spotlight some of the themes and stories that have defined the cinema of 2019 – from post-#MeToo movies to the fortunes of the European arthouse, as well as expanded cinema and a countdown of the best TV of the year.

  16. Roger Ebert's Film of Year Since 1967's icon

Roger Ebert's Film of Year Since 1967

Favs/dislikes: 68:0. This is a list of every film that critic Roger Ebert has called the best film of that year. The list starts in 1967 and goes to 2012. *Special note: In 2008 and 2009 Ebert did not rank his choices. Therefore I went with whatever film he listed from that year on his best of the decade list.
