This is a far more interesting list than the highest grossing list without adjustment for inflation.

The length of this list is daft now.

Being the 100th highest-grossing film out of all movies ever released -- that's an achievement.

Being the 1,000th -- who cares?

Can someone give me a reason why both those "All Time Box Office Whatever" lists had to be expanded with 1000 films each?
No, actually...I double dare someone to explain this pathetic choice of expansion!

Phil2000, where are you getting that there are 1000x the number of movie theaters than there were in 1939? Is that an actual fact or an assumption?

In my home town, there were three theaters when I was growing up in the 1990s. One had 12 screens, one had 10 screens and one had three screens. Now, all three are gone and a new one opened up with 12 screens. We're down 15 screens from where we were 20 years ago. All I ever hear about are theaters closing. People just don't go the movies like they used to. Also, theaters used to seat insane amounts of people back then.

So this is the reason my rank got butchered. I really need to watch these "popular" movies more.

I'm perfectly happy to see It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World and House of Wax one of these days, but I refuse to watch Transformers 2 or Spider-Man 3 just to complete a list that has more of my least favorite movies on it than any other! (Grinch, Spidey 2, new Star Warses.)

It would probably be impossible, but wouldn't it be great if you could have a list of films by number of tickets sold? This inflation-adjusted list comes close to that, I suppose, but I suspect that movie ticket price rises have outpaced official inflation rates over time.

@blueboybob All that being said, I think this list is a good representation of popular movies throughout the history of Hollywood, I just wouldn't give the ordering and numbers any credence.

Phil2000, GWTW has absolutely sold more tickets than Avatar. In fact, it isn't even close. According to Box Office Mojo (who base their adjusted gross on tickets sold) have GWTW at #1 and Avatar at #14 (whose adjusted gross has actually decreased since it was released.)

Μοnty, dude...a list with Animal House in its roster can't be THAT bad ;) (apart from all the shitty Twister and Avatar pictures, heh)
