This list is "an educational resource that offers guidance and encouragement as students seek to find points of orientation within the vast history of film and video." It is not a list of the best films of all time. Rather, it reflects a variety of criteria.
The list is divided into 5 sections:
I. Narrative Films
Hollywood Genres (with an emphasis on the classical studio era)
II. Non-Fiction Films
III. Animated Films
IV. Experimental/Avant-garde/Underground Films
V. Single-channel Video
The "Hollywood Genres" section is divided into subsections:
1-12: Comedies
13-25: Epics
26-41: Film Noir
42-55: Gangster Films
56-70: Historical and War Films
71-86: Horror Films
87-101: Melodramas
102-115: Musicals
116-127: Science Fiction Films
128-143: Westerns
144-159: Independent Cinema
