@timothysimon: As I said they were going for variety, so they didn't want to include too many films by the same director. They included 2 Malick films and 3 Powell films. They included both Psycho and 2001 in the "Hollywood Genres" section of the list. This is just the first section of the list. See the source link for the complete list. I'm planning to eventually add all of the sections to iCM.
and if as it says it is to get a better understanding of the history of the medium and how it has developed then why is 2001 not here? it was revolutionary in so many ways
its good to see "if...." on the list but personally i think they have missed a couple of key films. having seen less than 50 here i'm not in a great position of authority but i think "days of heaven" is a wonderful film and should be seen not only for its cinematography but its unique direction, use of narration and allegory.
also i wonder why they overlooked a matter of life and death, 12 angry men, and the hugely influential psycho. among others.
nonetheless its an interesting list to have a look at.
@timothysimon: They were trying to include a wide variety of films, so I guess they didn't want to include too many Chaplin films (there are 4 of them on the list). The Godfather is included in the "Hollywood Genres" section of the list, which I haven't added to iCM yet.
