Yeah, coral, I definitely think you're using the imdb top 250 appropriately. It's great for people just getting into film, but not something that's going to have much appeal to people that have been into film for awhile. I hope you also decide to give Keaton and Lloyd a chance since you liked The Gold Rush so much. Of course, Chaplin is certainly worthy of further attention himself.
84 movies to go and I have loaded up my Netflix queue (22 available on instant, the rest need to be mailed, which is ok because they come in within 2 days). Only 2 were not available on Netflix, Sleuth, and The Gold Rush. I promptly found The Gold Rush on youtube and was completely captivated by it. My fist Chaplin film and his first feature too apparently! This is just an example of how this list has served me; I probably would not have seen this movie, or even known about it if the list hadn't presented it to me. Hopefully I will find Sleuth soon too.
I first discovered this list a year ago in hopes of never seeing a 'bad' movie again. Even though some of the movies on this list (that I have seen so far) that were hard for me to watch and I didn't particularly enjoy watching have really opened my mind to major cultural landmarks and filming techniques.
Any movie I see that I don't like, I eagerly seek opposing opinions, and critical evaluation so I can at least try to understand the appeal. This doesn't usually change my opinion but gives me much more satisfaction.
This list has been pretty much perfect for me, so far, as a beginner movie aficionado. I've made some great discoveries and watched movies that I might not have considered otherwise. I challenge that anyone will have movies on the list that they don't like, but that doesn't invalidate them necessarily.
Just a little addon to my previous post:
The Philadelphia Story is currently occupying spot number 250. It has an average rating of 8.1 from 30,568 votes. The "Weighted Rating" for that movie is 7.99, just a tad above what Grand Illusion scores.
@Hage89: I think you forget that the Top 250 is measured differently, they use a "Weighted Rating". If you look at the bottom of the IMDb Top 250 page, you'll find the formula they use.
I just did the math for Sherlock Jr. and for Grand Illusion. Sherlock Jr. has an average rating of 8.4 (not 8.0) from 8,934 votes, while Grand Illusion has an average rating of 8.2 from 13478 votes. Using these numbers you get a "Weighted Rating" of 8.02 for Sherlock Jr and 7.96 for Grand Illusion.
Votes my ass. There are movies in the yop 250 with less votes than La grande illusion. Such as Sherlock jr. with less than 10,000 votes and a rating of 8.0 it occupies the 229th spot on the list. La grande illusion has over 13,000 votes and a rating of 8.2 and is not in the list.
Wow! La Grande Illusion isn't even here anymore! As sickening as that is, there are a lot of great films on here I've been wanting to see (as well as some unspeakably bad ones!) so me and the wife begin our quest. No challenges to races please, full-time work and a kid rule out movie marathons, much to my chagrin :-)

X-Men First Class is the first major release of 2011 to be on the Top 250. You should see it added on the next update.Knaldskalle

The loss of La Grande Illusion is a grand disaster to the Top 250. Hopefully it'll be back soon. It's Top 100 for me.Kinchski
