60. Batman Forever
I was looking forward to revisiting this movie which I saw in the cinema when I was 14 years old and absolutely loved it! A strong cast with stars such as Val Kilmer, Nicole Kidman, Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones made it seem like a guaranteed good time when I tuned in to the right channel the other day. And then.... the suffering could begin. I could finally observe all the terrible flaws which had totally escaped me 18 years ago. There are too many to name. I usually like over-the-top performances, like Jack Nicholson in the first Batman movie, but this is just boring, confused sillyness. And the lighting is always a strong unnatural colour which gives the movie a fake cartoony feel, a complete opposite of Tim Burton's dark and gritty take on the batman legend, which is obviously what franchise-killer Joel Schumaker went for. There are too many characters, too many plot threads which fizzles out into nothing and too little atmosphere. In retrospect I have to label this mess a very bad movie indeed. No wonder the next one, Batman & Robin, flopped critically and commercially, which by the way is an even worse movie than this despite, once again, having a wonderful cast and for all the same reasons. Incredible!

25. Alien 3
I am a big fan of Aliens from 1986, a movie that took the premise of the good chiller Alien from the 1979 and ran with it, creating one of the most tense adrenaline rush rides of movie history. I salute the producer for once again trying to go in a new direction with a different, but skilled director, David Fincher. Such an approach is good in trying to keep things fresh and add something new to the franchise. This time however, the gamble did not pay off. The movie fails to reach the excellence of the second installment and also fails to match the original from the 70s. That does not mean that the movie itself is bad. It is actually good, but the bar has been raised almost impossibly high by those two first movies. Sigourney Weaver gives another solid performance in her signature role as Lt. Ripley and she is surrounded by a good supporting cast. I can spot some modern CGI effects here and there which I despise and makes this alien occasinaly seem more fake than those in the two first movies, but overall, this movie is still good despite its many flaws.

46. Dumb And Dumber
1994 really was the year of Jim Carrey, He stared in no less than three smash hits that is currently the 6th, 9th and 11th most popular movies from that year. Dumb And Dumber, The Mask and Ace Ventura were all good vehicles for Carrey's over the top physical comedy. The art of slapstick was rumored to be dead until Carrey came along and revived it. But after recently rewatching Dumb And Dumber I have to admit that this movie, just like other Carrey movies, is a mixed bag. Several laugh out loud moments and a few rather dumb ones. Surprisingly, normally straight actor Jeff Daniels gives a performance to match Carrey's and Lauren Holly is a good casting choice as their confused love interest in distress. Overall, I would say that this is still a good movie.
