It’s true that French are fascinating by american movies and try to “copy” this style i will say for 3 reasons :
- Because, it’s got commercial success and we still don’t admit that 30 years ago our national cinema was in 1st position. so by copying the american style, we think that’s its’ the best way to get back the lost audience and fight against the “invasion” of american movies. French people are stille very nostalgic of the Belmondo/Ventura/Delon period wahn French movies were the reference, from author/boring to entertaining movies
- Because of the Nouvelle vague and it’s great success around the world, commercial movies done during the 60s, the 70’s and beginnig of the 80’s, for example Belmondo’s movies, have disapeared for our screens. The directors of this period were mainly influenced by the Nouvelle vague or they were still active
- 20 years after, same effects but in the other side. All the youg director, between 20 and 40 years old have been raised with american movies at the time the national production was doing less commercial movies.
We still want to take our position back and say to the audience “French movies are cool” and covering all the genre and not only drama and comedy
Pour elle has been remade as the next 3 days

Thank you. I've been meaning to see Welcome and Pour Elle for some time. I was excited to see à l’Origine, but it was a bit of a disappointment. I have also seen le 1er jour du reste de ta vie, Mesrine, and OSS 117. I'd ranked Mesrine first, premiere jour second, and OSS 117 last. Michel Hazanavicius' films tend to appeal to a lot of people, but I tend not to enjoy his films.

I also feel that when French films try to be too American or copy the American style, it is their undoing. When I was watching Tavernier's L'Appât and Marie Gillain walks into a video store and says that American movies were better than French films, I was appalled. I feel that there are plenty of great French films that can tackle difficult subjects with ease. In America, everything has to be happy-go-lucky and that is not always a good thing.

In France, a common thought is the Nouvelle Vague, at the end, has been more a burden than an opportunity and is one of the reason of decrease of French movies sold tickets . Until the mid-90’s, except Luc Besson and comedy, French movies was neo-Nouvelle Vague. Since 20 years, under the influence of US movies, young directors try to get free from this heavy legacy and try to get back the public with more popular, still good, films.
For the past 3 years, I can recommend Welcome, à l’Origine, le 1er jour du reste de ta vie, Mesrine, pour elle, OSS 117
I will try to set-up a list of my own for mvoies since 1990

Thank you. I spent some time in France. I also like the Nouvelle Vague very much, even if people in France don't necessarily care for those films. Or in some cases, the newer generation wouldn't see the older films.

I'll try the films you recommended.

i don't know how you can see so many french movies, it's incredible ! your list is reflecting some great and very sharp tastes. even if i am French i didn't see most of these films and most of the time by choice
however French movies is not just "Author" movies and "boring" movie which is the most common reproach made in France to our cinema. it's also comedy, war, historic, crime, horror, cop etc.... it's a little bit more diversified than your list

for 2O11, try Polisse, La guerre est declarée and intouchables. popular with great critics

Thank you for your comment. These are my personal favorites. If the films are not on my list, they are not my favorites. If you have a list, I'll take a look at it. What films would you include?

some many great and acclaimed and/or popular French movies are missing. French movies can be good and entertaining and not only post Nouvelle-Vague genre
