Winston Churchill once said: "Democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried." I feel the same way about this list.
frankly I think its crazy for people to expect a list of a 1000 bloody movies to shake out exactly the way they want it to. The TSPDT is a very useful tool and like any list is by no means definative, so people should really stop complaining.
Regarding the age thing, I love that the majority of the site's sources for their ranking system is aimed at movies that have had time to sit in people's minds. If anything, I think the quality of the overall list was diminished when they took on Rottentomatoes...a site largely based on immediate reaction to a movie. Now we have the Dark Knight on there instead of some gem I could have uncovered from deep in some great directors filmography.
Paper_Okami - the whole point of theyshootpictures.com is to rank the pictures through their methodology. Their method isn't perfect - what method is? - but they are the most rigorous and methodical out of any similar list I've seen.
Why don't you look up the They Shoot Pictures site to see how they came up with it. like any system it has its flaws, but it needs to be commended for it's constant effort of finding more sources to make it as accurate as possible within that system. It is a great place to start a film education. Of course there will be, for every individual that undertakes the task of seeing these movies, many films that will not suit your particular taste; but that doesn't make it a bad list.
For every film that someone deems horrible, I am sure that there are as many, or more people, who think it is great.
Jirin, I agree wholeheartedly. Time should be no constraint, especially for a list that is gauging the most acclaimed films. It doesn't take long for a film to become critically acclaimed.
@ Kasparius - it's just repetitive, I'm not saying the films on it are bad at all (though some really are). But then again, most consensus lists are boring so what do you expect...
@MaxS: Of the many qualities I consider in judging a film, 'How old is it' is not one of them. It's kind of ridiculous not to have things like Annie Hall, Star Wars, or Ran in the top 100 just because they came after 1970.
From what I have seen on this intimidating list, like 30% of the movies, I have liked a huge amount. I've noticed a lot of them aren't available on Netflix, which is a bummer.
I agree with jarmel that this is by far the best list. It is a real education and it has taken some time for me to track these down and watch them. I am about to reach the final 20, but am not sure if I can complete the list due to a very few being hard to find or not having English subtitles. There are some other good lists on here too but not quite so good as this.
This is absolutely the ultimate list! A bit too much American and English speaking films in it, but by far better than any other film list out there. Even if you need four years to finish it (with updates), you'll know much more about the art of cinema and film making. After watching them all, you'll just laugh when watching Avatar and the likes...
@MrCarmady, considering the fact that you have barely seen over 200 of these films I don't really understand how you can call this list Awful and boring.
i totally don't agree with the new 81 titles which included The Dark Knight and Million Dollar Baby, they dont fit with the rest of the movies, but still this is the list that i want to check every movie on it
