Going into this movie with no expectations and you'll probably be pleasently surprised.
The final 15 minutes or so can definetely put some people off though.
7/10.

10 Cloverfield Lane is a side-story happening somewhere else in the U.S. of A. during the original Cloverfield attack, and like the original film, it's a monster movie made with relatively little means. But instead of the overused found footage premise, this is a made as a tight thriller, a three-hander set in closed confines, playing out in the margins of a monstrous invasion (it's closer to Signs that way). The script is highly efficient, with everything you see or hear having relevance to either the plot or the deceptively rich themes. If this is an estranged sequel to the original, then all the characters likewise suffer from parental estrangement. The insanely good and understated John Goodman seeks to replace his daughter with Mary Elizabeth "MacGyver" Winstead, who would merely be trading one abusive father figure for another if she were to accept his bunker's domesticity. John Gallagher is more big brother than love interest, but there are Oedipal ramifications to his presence. Exciting, funny, mysterious, tragic, clever, empowering... That's a heck of a lot of boxes for a silly genre sequel to check.

Scariest scene is John Goodman dancing on “I Think We’re Alone Now".

Such a shame that the producers didn't have faith in the film for what it was, a finely crafted claustrophobic thriller, and felt the need to tack on that abysmal final act to sell tickets. Even more of a shame that it worked and could provide the blueprint for similar wastes of potential in the future.

Surprisingly, I loved this one. It's very well put together and largely a suspenseful, cagey little thriller. I wouldn't bother seeing it in imax, though - it's set almost entirely in a bunker and the cinematography, while polished (if a little standard), relies on claustrophobic close-ups throughout much of the film, which kind of seems like the antithesis of ultra-ultra-widescreen.

The ending worked so well that I'm in two minds about it. One possibility is that there's a point where the original ended and the Let's Make It a Spiritual Sequel to Cloverfield reshooting began - but it was so well done that I almost think that the final sequence already existed, but extra shots were added and some digital alterations spoiler

My initial reaction to the final 15 minutes was that of disappointment, and yet I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thrilled all the same.

Also, feels Goodman.

This comes across as leftovers from some community college creative workshop assignment: take two, unrelated and mundane movie ideas, then combine them to make something original.

Didn't like the ending at all, really unnecessary and didn't fit the movie at all.To be fair though the first 90 minutes where also mediocre at best.
