I loved the movie but the scene (or should I say the 2 seconds) of theBut why did the detective shoot anyway? Did Haines look so suspicious and dangerous that there was no other choice but to shoot him down? And how did the detective miss? Not only did he miss but the bullet went no where near Haines.
Why wasn't the detective worried after doing so? He's in serious trouble now for sure. He's not going to jail if he's lucky, but he's definitely loosing his badge. Imagine policemen having a right to shoot anyone they feel like because they are chasing a man who may or may not killed someone (even if he did kill his wife, he had a strong motives to do so. He wasn't a maniac. Also he wasn't armed. There were zero reasons for policeman to shoot and there were as many reasons to put this scene in the movie).
This two second long part of the film is so stupid I could talk about it forever. Who's idea was it? I wish I blinked when it happen. I bet thousands of people did, that way this movie is still regarded as an excelent thriller and one of the best Hichcock's masterpieces...

@ jktomas : yes you're kind of right about these 2 seconds, it doesn't ruin the film, but sure is disturbing.Other scene that i didn't understand : why did Haines have to win the tennis game? couldn't he just loose to end it faster? Is the tournament really more important than his life???
Apart from some details absolute masterpiece in terms of mise en scene.

Classic Hitchcock. The shot of Walker in the tennis crowd is brilliant.Joker of Gotham
Only a few complains about the movie, the ending for me was a little bit of disappointment. I prefer other movies of Hitchcock.3.5/5

A spectacular nail-biter of a thriller with dark comic overtones. Farley Granger is absolutely pitch-perfect in his role as Bruno Anthony and Robert Walker carries the exact chemistry to counter-balance him. The plot ensnares all in its web of clever deceit and psychopathic lies. Strangers on a Train's climactic scene is like the film, engrossing and stressful but also ever so slightly amusing.A true masterwork of suspense.

Yet another example that Hitchcock clearly deserved the title Master of Suspense.sacmersault
I never thought a merry-go-round would be fun until i saw the merry-go-round of death. Wah jah jahShidan
Guy is just stupid. Also, it would be impossible for Bruno to get the lighter from the drain on the street.Still, the movie is very entertaining, intriguing and suspenseful.

In Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train, two strangers meet and one has a macabre idea. What if they each did the other's murder, leaving no trail or motive to follow? What happens, then, when he commits the criss-cross murder, while the other man had no intention of following the crazy plan? Though not as well regarded as some of the others, there are some great Hitchcockian ideas in here, including a device through which the villain's madness becomes apparent, and a tennis match used to ramp up the tension. Great shots of the villain stalking the protagonist as well, pure Hitchcock, that. I personally love the completely insane merry-go-round finale, preferring to think it inventive and exciting rather than ridiculous. I will agree the resolution is a little tepid after that, however, and the police at times embarrassing.DisneyStitch
Classic Hitchcock in so many ways. The premise of the movie is both brilliant on paper and likewise on the screen. Many scenes are busting at the seams with cinematic genius like at the Jefferson Memorial and Bruno's motionless face in the tennis crowd. One of my favorite Hitchcock films.ReVision
The merry-go-round scene was superb! Overall it was a pretty good movie, but not great.Lumiana
I watched the movie after reading the book which was probably a mistake. All I could see was how different the two were from each other. They start the same way but suddenly the movie goes in completely the opposite direction. If you enjoyed the movie, I suggest you read the book, it is even better.Dieguito
Brilliant, clever movie.. Farley Granger is even better than in Rope.Scream1008
