Flops

I'm pretty sure this would have been my favorite movie if I was a kid in the late 30s. It reminded me of The Princess Bride. It's got something for everyone.

Agree with Duke of Omnium. It's well acted, well written, well executed film. Nearly flawless. But most importantly it leaves you with a happy feeling for the rest of your day. I can't imagine anyone hating this movie.

What's not to like? Great script, great (and plausible) stunts, great cast. Looks great in Technicolor (though a bit oversaturated, like all US Technicolor films). Nearly a perfect movie.

The movies featuring Robin of Loxley have been a well known source of material for Hollywood. The Kevin Costner version, Russell Crowe version, and then there's this gem all the way from 1938 with the incomparable Errol Flynn in the title role. In many ways it is one of the earliest action and swashbuckling movies. Great dialogue and action with a plot that anyone in the family can enjoy.

On a side note, did you know that they actually shot the actors with real arrows in this film? Each extra was reportedly paid a whopping $150 for each time they were hit by legendary archer Howard Hill. I mean come on, can you imagine Hollywood doing something like that nowadays? Absolutely fantastic.

One of the greatest old adventure movies. Loved it as a kid and showed it to my 8 year old son who adored it. Still lots of fun, great action and entertainment

It was interesting watching Michael Curtiz's The Adventures of Robin Hood with people essentially raised on Mel Brooks' Men in Tights because it seemed more like an archaeological artifact to them. So much of that movie is taken from Adventures that it's almost a remake with more jokes rather than a parody or spoof. Anyway, the 1938 classic is like a storybook come to life - it gives you all the story beats you know, has Robin Hood laughing in what you could call camp acting, and is almost impossibly colorful. None of the gritty realism they try to do these days. There's still a high body count in the first act, but it's a bloodless affair. Errol Flynn has a lot of fun, it shows, and there's plenty of swashbuckling action to keep one entertained as we go from set piece to set piece. It's interesting that the Sheriff of Nottingham is sidelined in favor of the more sinister Guy of Gisbourne (Basil Rathbone, we're in good hands), though I could use a taller Little John. The most influential Robin Hood movie in film history, but it may seem a little shallow to modern eyes.
