Very impressive. Sissy Spacek doing another creepy character just after Carrie, she really knows how to be strange! A classroom for Shelley Duvall just before The Shining! Great movie!

There's nothing like this movie. Watching it is like wandering through a maze of dreamlike imagery and intensely painful emotions. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Based on a dream that Robert Altman had - creepy and funny mixed together. Have a burger melt!

Not a fan of Altman, I even gave the highly acclaimed Nashville two stars, but 3 Women is fantastic. Sissy and Shelley are wonderful together.

An eerie, desolate presentation of that loathsome feminine brand of vapidity and hormonal hysteria we’ve seen depicted numerous times before. 3 Women is radically different but in a vein distantly related to both Bergman’s Persona and Polanski’s Repulsion, though arguably even less grounded and yet more accessible and superficially stimulating than both those pictures.

Many of the other great American auteur works of this era often suffer in production quality for what they gain in grittiness and candor (a fact I’d be hard-pressed to bemoan). This is not, however, the case for Robert Altman’s 1977 classic, which is tight and mature in terms of craft while at the same time maintaining that loose and rugged spirit of the never-ending adolescence that defined his generation. His is a well-rounded film and could be considered a full package as long as you don’t mind your plots a little bit on the what the fuck is going on here side of things.

It’s true that 3 Women loses lucidity as it wanders spasmodically toward its climax (at parts, reaching Lynch-level magnitudes of eccentricity) and by the conclusion has entered a realm which defies all narrative logic. Don’t try too hard to figure it out; it was based on a dream that Altman had which may have been just as confounding to him as it is to us. Or maybe not. I recommend this one to all film goers who enjoy a stark, distorted representation of planet Earth that will make you feel as if your reality had been swapped with an impostor (a.k.a. The Twilight Zone effect).

By my own convoluted criteria (the variables of which I will spare you), I give 3 Women an 8.6/10.
