I didn't like the movie very much. It's too stagy for me.
In the Hepburn's biography Kate remembered the author writes Hepburn "felt the pathos of Barrymore's performance in the film matched that of his life. She thought he was as tortured - a sad, lonely man. She found his portrayal of Hilary Fairfield, a , 'really touching'."
I find this quote about George Cukor (from the same book) also interesting: "[...] Cukor inserted a few shots that did nothing whatever to advance the story nor to deepen character. They were simply lingering shots of Hepburn, moments in which the audience could adjust to her and get acquainted with her." It certainly worked.
