Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk give powerful performances. Sometimes uncomfortable and difficult to watch, but worth seeing at least once.

The scene with the spoiler was so hard to watch. Mental illness is such a devastating thing. The sickness can appear in so many different intensities and stages. It effects everyone around the ill person. This movie shows in graphic detail the pain of it all.

Gene Rowlands gives the most horrifyingly good acting performance I have ever seen in the first hour. I though the dinner scene was the best scene I had ever seen, but then the movie just kept getting better and better.

You watch this film and teeter on a bolster's edge between thigh-slapping absurdity and cheek-soaking sentimentality. Peter Falk is just phenomenal with his tender wordless gazes, but that's two Cassavetes films i've seen which nearly capsize under the weight of gurning (Minnie and Moskowitz is the other).

"This is your father talking so you obey me. I remember before when you were punching me in favour of your mother" -- great line!

Great movie, amazing performance by Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk. Though I don't really know, why I like this movie that much, sure: perfect directing, very good acting, very good cinematography, but there are a many movies with this. Maybe it's because of lines, people in this movie talk like people really talk. Anyway, for me one of the best movies ever.

The acting was great and it was a fascinating portrayal of how mentally illness effects families and everything.... but what was the message exactly? If you slap a mentally ill woman it makes her somewhat snap out of it? Seems like a kind of misogynistic and gross blight on an otherwise excellent family drama.

It'll be strange watching another Columbo after seeing Peter Falk's performance in this.

deckard.

movies of cassavetes always fail to invoke any kind of emotional response in me. they are so dull, plastic and pretentious.
