Ava DuVernay's next big project after acclaimed Selma and 13th is... a big project. Dare I say too big?
The way A Wrinkle in Time jumps back and forth between clicking and failing is remarkable. Some of the emotional beats work, some of them fall flat. Some of the VFX are stunning (seriously, stunning), most of them look unfinished. Some of the acting is great (Storm Reid is a standout), most of it is tough to watch.
And DuVernay often chooses to make every character's faces fill up 3/4 of the screen. Closeups closeups closeups. It gets old, and highlights the bad performances.
That being said, it's a decent watch. It doesn't live up to Disney's other live action ventures (I'm one of the few defenders of Burton's Alice), but it's not a terrible film exactly. Just a big mess. 6 years 1 month ago -

About 20 minutes before the end of this movie I realized that I just didn't care enough about the story or the characters to continue watching, and gave up. And the acting by the children is horrendous (then again, what could they do with the equally horrendous dialogue they were given). 5 years 11 months ago
