Similar to other late Imamura films with its focus on community, sexual obsession/dysfunction, magic realism, sobering views of the world outside of its setting, and an emphasis on color (particularly red), but I found it too distancing and its characters pretty thin---which is a shame given its formal beauty. I couldn't get into it, or find a reason to care, and this is coming from someone who's a big fan of Imamura's post documentary work. 9 years 7 months ago
