It is a impressive film for the time. It demands repeat viewings as there is no way you can understand the plot or take in the animation in just one sitting.

HillJackBob - I don't know, dismissing an entire country's output in a certain genre based on two films out of thousands seems pretty reasonable to me. I mean, I once watched "Forrest Gump" and "Driving Miss Daisy" and then decided that American drama just isn't for me.

rwj, before you dismiss all anime you should try some of the Studio Ghibli films. Things like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are a whole world different than Akira and Ghost in the Shell.

If you have to start your anime education, you sort of have to start with this one. The ultraviolence is juicy and disturbing, the animation still stands up today, and the soundtrack is terrific. No easy answers at the end though.

I did not like it, although there were some beautiful moments in it and it has an amazing soundtrack. They just use to much violence to get their point across, at least for my taste.
