I love the first 45 minutes, when Christian Bale gets to flaunt his brilliant acting. After that I feel like the movie doesn't hold up.

The film's director, Mary Harron, told Black Book magazine that Bale initially struggled with the role of Patrick Bateman until he noticed Cruise's "intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes" during a David Letterman interview...

As everyone's remarked, Christian Bale knocks it out of the park. Watching his Bat-work prior to this, I can't help but draw comparisons to Bruce Wayne as socialite. Towards the end, he's almost confused by his numb response to his empty life. The film admirably simmers along a twisted undercurrent of what happens when the elite try and compose themselves out of the constituent parts of the vapid cultural wreckage, and how they destroy themselves once they hit the top, equally typically. Hearing the constant name-dropping made me feel like I was in a pristine, sterile meta-maze, and the grue that ended up getting all over the walls was highly welcome. Not multi-dimensional enough to warrant a recommendation, but still worth a look, and in no way comparable to any kind of slasher flick, despite appearances.
(And it figures that Bateman wouldn't like early Genesis either.)

Christian Bale's finest performance? A great adaptation of a book that I mostly loathed reading? Much like Fight Club, this is one that a lot of people misunderstand and love for the wrong reasons.

I felt quite uncomfortable watching this... A great movie anyways.

Fantastic movie.
Christian Bale does a great portrayal of Bateman and his acting is really fantastic.
Really surprised just how much the script stuck to the book aswell, the dialogue is identical in most places, nice to see a film do that.
Not so keen on the changed order of events though and the slight setting changes from the book but I can understand why they did it as it wouldn't have worked as well as a film if they hadn't.
Even after that criticism though, it's one of the best movie adaptations of a book I've seen.

This is one of those typical "feel bad movies". I watched it with great expectations and it did answered them.

Notes for the stunning performance of Christian Bale. It's pretty obvious how the character is acting all the time, the forced voice, the mannerisms. That's not easy to do.

As I didn't read the book, I can't compare, but I love the end which you just don't know what just happened.

They said the novel couldn't be filmed ... and they were right. This movie gets praise way beyond its merits.

Although it made me a little squeamish at times, I fully appreciated the film's purpose in its satirical approach. What drives the film's success is its social commentary and thematic intent... Not the acting (or rather, the actor). Bale did a fine job, though.
