Very difficult to watch for any animal lover. I almost stopped it at some points, but I'm glad I watched it all the way through; unusual story and characters with great camera work.
Alejandro Iñárritu's first feature film was Amores Perros (Love's a Bitch), which starts with a couple of young men racing away from gangbangers and getting into a car accident. From there, the wheel spokes branch out to tell three powerful stories of love and loss. In the first, "Can Do No Wrong" Gael García Bernal is in love with his mean brother's wife and uses his dog to raise the money he needs to run away with her. Fair warning: Dog lovers will find the dog fighting element harrowing, even if movie magic is used to realize it. In the second, the model who is also in the accident suffers through recovery, made more complicated by her little dog getting lost under the floorboards of her and her lover's new apartment. The third concerns a mysterious hitman and the daughter who believes he is dead. What they have in common is dogs who mirror the protagonist's condition - one combative, the second trapped, and the last a killer on the mend. Dogs and complex emotions. Though "anthologies" like this normally ask you to pick favorites, I can't here. I found each one riveting, and this despite the spending a long time in the first. I never resented switching. Iñárritu juggles things so well, you can hardly believe he's just starting his career.
The title really does say it all. It is definitely one of those films that challenge your patience, but I felt myself unable to pull away from it at the same time. I found myself drawn to its characters, despite their many shortcomings, but with redeemable qualities as well. The plot is compelling since the first minute, and that intensity never really fades- although it does tend to weaken at the end. Then again, the last part sort of spoke for itself, and contained the strength of the film. It's a true rollercoaster ride of a film, albeit not a happy one. Don't watch it if you're looking for a feel-good movie.
of the three main stories, the last was the best, but i couldn't shake the notion that this whole "interwoven" gimmick is getting over done. just my opinion. had you watched each story individually, WITHOUT the "connecting, interwoven" gimmick, the first two stories were pretty weak and the third average. not that impressed by these characters or thier stories.
Great camerawork, acting, screenplay. Although the stories are not really interwoven in a sense that they merge in one way or another. It's about 3 relatively shallow stories (from 3 different and interesting perspectives I have to add) that meet very briefly during a car crash scene. Note: these stories are portrayed beautifully.

I think that the director got us to the point by giving us some extreme examples. An absolutely worth watching movie.jhhayes
A masterpiece of Mexican cinema.daisyaday
This film begins with the assurance that no animals were harmed, but dog lovers should be warned that - it APPEARS that dogs were harmed.Siskoid

Brilliant, but having said that it's one of the most psychologically draining movies I've seen.Chocoladeridder

Two amazing quotes:"¿Entonces cómo?"
and
"Bueno...y unos boletos para los Rolling Stones."

The title is apt - Love's a bitch, as portrayed in all the 3 stories perfectly...patato
