I don't think I could possibly loath this film more than I do.

This film pushes it to the limit and then some more. If you thought 'Oldboy' was bad, this cuts twice as deep (and thank God that a certain school shooter didn't get his hands on THIS one as it could have made him REALLY creative). Its' central problem is that, in order to convey the essence of an inhuman protagonist, it has to take the audience to a truly inhuman place, and it starts well, but in the end foregoes audience rapport. If the central point was 'he who fights monsters' story, consider the point made, it just overbears the point with drawn out ultrarealism, like much of its ilk. Perhaps its the problem of a desensitized audience, but this film is determined to make you feel something, at the expense of a worthwhile experience. It's not so much the excessive lingering on the graphic violence that is the problem (if any film deserves the NC-17 solely for prurient carnage, it's this), but the nasty tone left in the mouth, as if the director started using torture to make his point and then became party to it. Consider his point made, but he should have remembered economy is key: there are moments of that, but the drawn-out focus on lurid sadism nullifies a lot of the more highbrow artistry that breaks up the action, and makes the film come across as bipolar.
It's also flabby, at around 20 minutes too long, and suffers from under-developed secondary characters and a melodramatic score which further bludgeons the audience. That said, there are a few highlights - a virtuosic panning shot taking place inside a taxi cab slaughter, the final revenge is total and sickeningly inventive, and an astonishingly monstrous central performance by Choi Min-Sik, who truly will make you believe you have seen the Devil. But the brisk invention is overshadowed by the lumpen feeling in your gut. There are better revenge films out there which don't beat you into submission to make their point. BUT - no other film COULD convince you so utterly of the futility of violent revenge, and on that level it really does succeed.

The concept wasn't bad but it could use a good edit and shave off at least 30 minutes.

Let me dedicate a whole minute of laughter towards the daffodils that think this was a horror movie, ahahahhahaha ohohohohohoho ehehhehehheh... It's a thriller or a Korean revenge-porn, whichever way you like it and I just looooove Korean revenge movies and this is definitely the finest one out there.

The tone is truly dark, the antagonist takes an inhumane amount of punishment and the "protagonist" dishes that amount with an inhumane conviction and stamina. The reason for the quotation marks is that there is no real protagonist in this film, Byung-Hun Lees character might start the film as the hero, but the way he loses control during his quest for the perfect vengeance makes him end up being nearly as despicable as the man he hunts. These things can be seen as a negative factor towards the film, but being an absolutely twisted fuck, I couldn't help but loving every minute of it. And it's not just one-dimensional "aaaargh you killed my gal, imma fuck you nao", there's some raw emotions, real regret and lifelike consequences. There's no happy ending where the protagonist finishes his revenge and then strolls into the sunset as an immortal hero. The revenge takes its toll on the "hero", leaving him distraught.

Byung-Hun "Hot" Lee is such a great actor, there are many scenes in the film where he just stares into nothingness or looks himself in the mirror and you can see the pain and inner turmoil as he descends into the unforgiving world of revenge. Min-Sik Choi also deliveres what is in my opinion the best role of his career, the wickedness of his character is pure perfection, yet there are some redeeming factors to his character. And the guitar scene... Orgasmic.

The cinematography and music on this film are also out of this world. The opening scene with the heavy snowing and Devil's Bossa playing on the background is right up there with The Great Silence in terms of great opening credit scenes.

quote:
Hey. Cut the bullshit. You already lost. You think you got me? Huh? Fuck you. I don't know what pain is. Fear? Don't know that either. There's nothing you can get from me. So... You already lost. Got that?

@Rubsol, that's the point, the movie was not supposed to be just good for the gore. They 'tried too hard' for making it a different 'man goes after the killer of his wife' theme but they failed. A lot of logical flaws in the movie, loads.

And in the above-mentioned theme, i think El Secreto.... trumps this movie like anything.

Also I dont see the big deal in the gore in this movie, there are MILLIONS of movie which have better and more gore than this, so that again is not something different or something good this movie has.
