Weirdly funny and extremely peculiar. Maddin works with his interest in early cinema with expressionistic sets, propaganda, and melodrama. The whole thing exists in a fog of amnesia with a vague sense of place and an undercurrent of desire. Perhaps a reflection on the absurdity of cinematic depictions of dire historical events; perhaps an exuberant display of Maddin's insular sensibilities. Perhaps something else entirely.
