A really touching story that's sometimes still very humorous. Jack Nicholson's performance is outstanding but Helen Hunt, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Greg Kinnear added lots to the film's charm as well. An amazing cast and lovely dialogs, I really liked this one.

it's a story about a nice lady lowering her standards to the point where they match with the man in the cover.

Jack Nicholson totally deserved an Oscar for this movie. This movie so funny from the beginning to end. ^_^

The film that put OCD on the map, as far as the mainstream goes, As Good as It Gets has some well-drawn characters, strong dialog, and is generally well-put together Oscar bait. Which is to say, it's extremely manipulative. Jack Nicholson, who at this point seems to always play some version of the Joker, is an outspoken bigot the movie tries very hard to redeem in time for some romantic closure, but the truth is, the film is more interesting (and believable) when it's about some unusual friendships. I like Greg Kinnear's gay artist with Jack, and with the dog, and with Helen Hunt's strong-willed waitress, and I even like Jack with Hunt when he's not looking for love with her. But it all falls apart for me in the third act when the movie becomes a romcom. Forgiveness, and people's ability to change, yes, yes, I get it. But this seems like such a male fantasy of a film (like many before and after it), that you can spend your life barking abuse at people - and it's not all OCD or mental health related, he really is a mean a-hole - and yet still get the girl (one who has said no repeatedly at that). The clue is that the relationship has one of those egregious age gaps that male fantasy romances always seem to promote.

I've finally seen both AGAIG and Good Will Hunting this year. Both came out in 1997 and were the other multiple winners at the Academy Awards in 1998 (you know, when Titanic mopped the floor with 11 wins). I was underwhelmed by Hunting (sue me!) and surprised by this movie. It's a fine one even though I don't think that Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt deserved their Oscars (instead of maybe Robert Duvall and Judi Dench, though Nicholson/Hunt totally deserved to be nominated). Cuba Gooding Jr., Yeardley Smith and especially Greg Kinnear were amazing though. The dog was adorable and also talented! There should have been a Original Screenplay Award tie between this movie and Boogie Nights (instead of a Good Will Hunting win). All in all, As Good As It Gets was, well, as good as it got.

Odd choice of title. The first half-hour or so confused me as it was a bit unclear who Nicholson's character really was at that point. People seem to think of him as a bit of a dick, but I'm not sure why. Hunt's character seems to already know him, but only in the sense that she knows his face and what he normally has when he comes in. She doesn't really "know" him if you see what I mean.

There almost seemed to be two plots going on with Nicholson, one with the dog and another with Hunt. Maybe that's why the film seems a bit too long.

Outside of that, the film is good though. The three lead actors are great and the chemistry between them is awesome.

Also didn't like how he just gets over his OCD at the end. That would never happen!

All of the characters are so fickle and incredibly annoying, except the dog, who grew on me a little. But the movie itself was bad.
