Apparently that other guy would rather think about people's farts than actually contemplate what Bardo is saying and why Inarritu chose to say it in that manner. 1 year 4 months ago -

Iñárritu contemplating the smell of his own farts for almost 3 hours. If you don’t get the references to mexican media and politics, don’t worry, there’s nothing deep or interesting to them. They only end up revealing him as the privileged asshole he is.
The dreamlike approach doesn’t fit at all. The “symbolism” is lazy, but it gets worse because Iñárritu feels the need to explain all of his ideas through dialogue too, so it becomes a repetitive and tiresome experience, scene to scene. It’s all text and... again, it’s not saying anything worth considering to begin with, and that’s the fatal flaw. Even if you could cut the runtime down to 100 minutes, it wouldn’t help. This is a man going to therapy in front of the world and expecting us to be impressed by his very specific insecurities.
When directors like Bergman or Fellini depicted their lives, fears and desires on screen (at least, in their best efforts) they would anchor them in universal themes and relatable situations; and also, they wouldn’t shoot in all directions and hope something would stick.
The migration and racial issues are far from being explored in any meaningful way... but don’t worry we get serious moments, like: “I’m angry because my dark skinned servant is not allowed into this section of the beach with my daughter.”
Fuck off!
I feel sorry for the audiences at Venice for having to endure a longer cut of this thing. 1 year 5 months ago
