Absolutely stunning performance by Natalie Portman. She was perfect in this. Also liked Vincent Cassel and Mila Kunis.
On the whole it's a great story told in a really dark and gripping way, all the despair and madness are developing so slowly that the audience can't immediately tell what is and isn't real. I felt like every scene made sense and added to the atmosphere and the intensity of the movie. The ending was incredible, I did not see it coming, but it fit perfectly as well.
A very special and unusual movie that's definately worth watching. Great!
i agree with frankqb, aronofsky is very very good at getting "under your skin"... the ways he can produce psychological tension and anxiety out of small traits--bad childhood habits, sexual immaturity, a naive desire for approval--makes for nuanced characters and compelling stories
Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan takes the story of Swan Lake itself and transposes it on the world of an anxious ballerina played by Natalie Portman. Like Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream, it turns the character's anxieties into a hallucinatory dreamscape, so subjective, the audience never quite knows what's real or not. In the process, the fable turns into a horror film made all the more potent by the cinema verite feel of the camera work. It captures well, I think, the world behind the scenes of the ballet, but may not connect to all audiences given the sometimes shocking use of gore and erotica. Once Portman's breakdown is well under way, the film treads the fine line between the grotesque and the silly, but ultimately succeeds in the transcendent final sequence.
This movie is spectacular! This film is about more than ballet. This much can be disdained from the cover. Portman's performance in this psychological thriller is breathtaking, hence her Oscar win. Everyone, Winona Ryder included is PERFECTLY cast and everyone just has that little spark of crazy in them that makes them so great. The buildup to the debut of Swan Lake is almost unbearable due to all the terrifying suspense. Portman's character Nina strives to perfect, and on the way she explores the possibilities of life. She dives into an unfamiliar world of socializing, clubs, and sex, all led my the dazzling Mila Kunis. This movie often gets negative criticism do to the vivid lesbian sex scene, but this scene is necessary to this awe-inspiring film in order to get the theme across. This film is not for everyone, but it should be appreciated for its daring plot., topics, and cinematography. Definitely for mature audiences only.
Portman is terrific and the movie has got an uneasy vibe but it left me cold and I actually didn't like it. It wasn't bad but it just didn't grab me at all..
