I found the first hour really boring, which detracted a lot from the movie's general enjoyment. Also, Sam's only defining characteristic is his love for Jill, I felt he was annoying and shallow. However, I tough the last 30 min were really awesome, I only wish there was more DeNiro in it.
"Do you care for some necrophilia?"
Incredible, hilarious, hopeful, and depressing Distopian film. It's been one of my favorites for years. The zany sense of humor is superb. Sadly, I think this film is even more apt now than it was in 1985. We haven't improved our society and culture at all.
1984 meets Monty Python meets Wallace and Gromit. Excellent pacing, great balance between comedy and drama. As far as dystopian films go, this is quite uplifting.
You'll willingly surrender to the plot's surreal conclusion. I know I'll be prosecuted for saying this; But personally I feel Jonathan Pryce's "Sam" character could have used a bit more depth. Brilliant movie though.
"I love everything about this movie except for the title. Calling a movie that takes place in a dystopian Britain "Brazil" is absolutely ridiculous."

It's named after the song which features prominently in the film.

quote:
"Aquarela do Brasil" (English: Watercolor of Brazil), known in the English-speaking world simply as "Brazil", is one of the most famous Brazilian songs of all time, written by Ary Barroso in 1939.
I hate to say it, but this was a swing and a miss for me. Stunning visuals and amazing production/set design, but the thin plot left me bored and the novelty of a dystopian society just doesn't hit very hard decades later
If Orwell's 1984 and dark comedy had a child it would be named Brazil. Incredible dystopian landscape that simultaneously makes you laugh one moment and then gasp a few moments later with how it's portrayed. It never allows you to get totally bogged down in the oppressed atmosphere the characters inhabit by using the humor to great effect. You get the sense that despite how intellectually strangled this world is, the characters are still going about their lives and eking out a living to the best of their ability.
I can't describe how claustrophobic this movie made me feel. Between the endless duct-work sandwiched into almost every shot, the busy corridors, and the magnifying shields in front of all the TVs this movie was a true psychological trip. Pryce is fantastic but everybody involved does a stellar job.
I really had no idea what this was as I was starting the movie. I'm also not normally a fan of 80s films (even the big hits). This one is pretty awesome, though. Definitely a bit out there, but kept me entertained the whole way along. Arguably my favorite 80s film now.

Only the Director's Cut is watchable. Brazil's moments have the brilliance of Orwell or Kafka, but the fantasy sequences show their age.briafly27
