Amazing a must watch-1flb2-
Content wise this was a hard movie to watch. Very depressing, but true to real life issues: which was not sugarcoated. This movie pushed all the emotional buttons.ChrisReynolds
Wow, they actually use defibrillators correctly! First in response to a fibrillation trace on an ECG, then later a flat-lining patient is treated with chest compressions.Apart from that the film is great, and I think it may be Von Trier's best work.

One of Lars Von Trier's most depressing film, or arguably even one of the most depressing films ever made. Breaking the Waves looks into the lives of a happy couple who suddenly face a battle with physical and mental disabilities. A realist drama with ground breaking performances from both Watson and Skarsgard. A long but rewarding watch, with quiet a surprise ending.nicolaskrizan

I wasn't affected at all, it just didn't work for me and felt ridiculous throughout the film.It does not have an emotional punch even close to films like:
Sansho The Bailiff
Ikiru
Tokyo Story
Red Angel
In a Year of 13 Moons
Ali:Fear Eats the Soul
In the Mood For Love
Farewell my Concubine
Carrie
The Best Years of Our Lives

Von Trier at the peak of his career, predating other tales of searing martyrdom such as Dancer in the Dark. Terrific!mledwards34

yeah the other four most depressing movies are also from Lars Von Trier most likely. Very depressing yet good.paakre
Emily Watson gives a searing portrayal of a faithful wife to an injured oil laborer husband. Visually and spiritually piercing.CaverX
Excellent movie, though one of the top five most depressing movies I have ever seen.
