My father loved this movie as a youngster. I was glad we got a chance to see it and experience what it was all about. It is a truly touching story, especially considering that it is a true one and that the real Chicago Browns staff played themselves in order to give tribute to Brian Piccolo. The love between these two friends, Brian and Gale Sayers, is quiet and steady, their devotion to one another pushing though injury and illness. This is a timeless, heart-warming story of friendship and a beautiful tribute to a loving man. 12 years 4 months ago -

It's Chicago BEARS, the Browns play in Cleveland
Being born a couple years before the time Sayers and Piccolo were playing and raised for the first decade and a half of existence in Chicago, Sayers was like the local OJ, something of a local legend when I was a kid. Didn't see this when it aired; sure it had to do with "past your bedtime" since I was still pretty young, but the title was something I always knew even if I didn't know the story.
The other thing is the theme song. That, I know. It's like engrained in my DNA I heard it so much growing up.
Find it interesting that some feel this is (was?) the best made for TV movie up until some point in time. It's not bad but calling it best is more a statement of why, for most of my life, saying "made for TV movie" was usually just a politer way of saying such movies were crap. This is better than crap, but the TV format, short running time, and all don't really seem to do the story as much justice as the tale deserves.
