Very middle of the road Woody Allen film. The only things that made it good were the photography, production design, costume design, all the art stuff. Aesthetically it's a wonderful film, but otherwise, it is just mediocre.

Woody Allen's latest, Café Society, a story that, through its romantic polygons, is about the dread of having made the wrong choice, and the wistful nostalgia that comes with it. Its Golden Age of Hollywood setting is thus well suited to the action, Allen's feelings about the era commenting on the same feeling. The film features a funny performance from Jesse Eisenberg (once again Allen's stand-in) and though about the Golden Age of Hollywood, some gangland murders played as effective punchlines, but it does seem overwritten to me. Allen himself provides prosaic narration that may provide a stylistic flourish, but his flat tone is rather tedious, and one may come to think the images told a better story. Likewise, the characters sometimes over-explain the way they look at relationships, when it's already clear from the action. Still pleasant, but perhaps his weakest since To Rome with Love.

Ok so this might be an unpopular opinion, but although Kristen Stewart did act well in this picture, clearly much better than usual, what made her so irresistible? How could she ever be preferable to the stunning sweetness of Blake Lively?

Opinions I can get behind:
-The movie was astoundingly aesthetically pleasing; I thought the lighting, locations, and costumes were all brilliantly done.
-I was definitely watching Woody Allen in a Jesse Eisenberg costume.

While Eisenberg constantly acts like little Woody Allen Kristen Stewart reminds me of Scarlet Johansson

Terrific production design. The movie looks amazing but story goes nowhere and Jesse Eisenberg plays a dreadfull character. Forgetable Woody Allen movie

Someone in the comments said "flat tone" and that just describes it perfectly. For a romantic movie, it's just passionless. Stuff like the lead character getting married and having a child is just stated flatly in narration.

Really, the poor romance movie gets in the way of a possibly interesting comic gangster movie.

Without being a great movie, it clearly shows the Woody Allen worldviews.
