No comments here yet? Caligola must be one of my favourite films of all time, even though it was marred by production problems of all kinds and despite the infamous hardcore scenes. It has that kind of horrendous extravagance and over the top ideas that Shakespeare used in most of his plays and for which the Romans were famous. How can you not love it? 11 years 8 months ago

It’s not just the emperor without clothes in this movie. The first and last feature length, narrative film to be made by Penthouse and thank Isis for that. It is an impressive film in some respects. The production value and casting (those who actually act) are laudable. The original screenwriter and director later disavowed this film because they disagreed with the inclusion of gratuitous sex —of which were interjected into the film later— I guess it’s better to have those scenes and not need them than need them and not have them .... ? It would be interesting to see a different edit of the film, but I don’t know if I would willingly subject myself to such unrelenting sadism, hedonism, and decadence that this film enthusiastically spews for a second viewing. I’m glad that Helen Mirren had little regrets, however; she was fantastic. Although at the end, I still was badly in need of a shower. 3 years 10 months ago
