Considering it is an exploitation movie catering to an audience thrilled by gory violence, gratuitous nudity, and anything else that can produce shock effects (like animal cruelty) it is surprisingly well made and asks critical questions about the very same stuff that itself is made of, and therefore invites the viewer to examine his own motivations for wathcing it (the movie actually ends with a decision to burn the footage due to its depraved nature). It also pioneers the found lost footage subgenre that later became so popular with movies such as The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield. Shot in lush jungle locations and beautifully scored by Riz Ortolani, nevertheless it is an eXploitation movie with a big X and as such will hold little interest for anyone that does not enjoy being shocked by movies pushing the borderline concerning morality and good taste.ca_horror_fan
If you're a seasoned horror, cannibal, or exploitation fan you should watch this--once. As the pinnacle of shock horror films of the 70s, it's brutal, led to murder charges for its makers, and raises interesting questions. Questions about limits, morality, and why we so quickly condemn this film for animal cruelty.. but rarely more mainstream films like Apocalypse Now. Good musical score.dwarfstar

I first learned about this movie as a teenager with access to the internet, and since then I'd wanted to watch it based on its reputation.I finally got around to it 15 years later, and I shouldn't have bothered. I don't think I've disliked a movie as intensely as this one. And I even watched the director's cut featuring less animal cruelty.

The animal cruelty is horrible but I really don't think the rest of the film is that bad. Surprised nobody's commented on how great/juxtapositioned the majority of the soundtrack is.Well worth watching for the infamous spike scene and unique soundtrack alone, if not for its slightly blatant attacks on western society.

Even though the turtle scene was the most disgusting (but not as bad as I thought) I'd have to say watching the first animal killing was the worst. Watching someone or something in legitimate pain really sucks. For me that plus the fact that it's basically just a bunch of clips showing fake violence, animal cruelty and other crap makes it in total a pretty crappy movie... Thankfully the music made my thoughts wonder a bit away... Won't see again but thankfully it wasn't as "horrible"/"nasty" as I feared.2.5/10

Finally forced myself to sit through this. I guess it's one of those "you had to be there" (when it first came out) situations, because aside from the atrocious scenes with real animals, I was more bored than disturbed. The authentic locations and surprisingly good music do most of the work. The effects are decent, but the "plot," the "acting," and the extremely heavy-handed "message" undermine what could have been a legitimately effective film. I can't think of a film more deserving of the "exploitation" tag. Whether that's a good thing or a bad one is up to the viewer to decide.lolita_mistrix

This is, as many people have already stated, an exploitation film for the sake of exploitation. Personally I didn't find the animal killings nor the depiction of cannibalism disturbing at all. This was a movie I had to watch because of all the hype, and thats exactly what it is, a hype. The concept of the movie is very intriguing, but a bad script combined with bad acting and the force feeding of the "moral" of the story mad this a somewhat boring movie to watch. If you haven't watched it yet, I wouldn't put you off watching it, since it has a good historical background of being one of the most gruesome movies, especially at the time of it's origin. This movie is for people who just want to see something crazy and don't care too much about characters nor story. 4/10 from mecubesofspinach

Initial thoughts: I can't believe not a single commentor has yet mentioned the disgusting depiction of women's bodies in the (many!) rape scenes. The camera lingers on their agony and on their nakedness.Of all of the things challenged in this film, the representation of female torture and murder is not at all. The torture itself, sure, is seen as morally objectionable, but the film doesn't do anything to challenge how it portrays - sexualizes - female bodies and female death/torture/pain. This goes beyond the gruesome and satirically-represented footage of the mini-movie within the film and encompasses the way in which the director shoots female bodies and torture scenes the rest of the time too.
This is, to me, an unexamined failure, and revealing of the fact that we still have a long way to go for women to be considered equal subjects to men. Women do not deserve to be sexualized for their pain; they are more than toys or objects to control.
While critically and clearly reflexive in many ways, the film seems to have fallen too to its subconscious moral depravity in at least this one. It was also just coming out of the 1970s, so I will consider it within the context of that time and don't think it necessarily represents where we are at today, but... I'm not really sure. Oof

Perhaps the first "found footage" film and quite well known in the cult film world, so that's interesting. I'm glad to have experienced and checked it off.
On another, disembodied hand: There's enough true brutality that's not sensationalized to avoid spending the time on this. And much of it is ignored, sensationalized or not. Go witness. I see this film has other purposes than that, though. I hope we all sleep well tonight.
