One of the best pieces of schlock you'll ever see. For the people who feel only the end is over the top and goofy...May I remind you of the fire works shot where De Niro is spread out in that pose on the wall with a HUGE and I mean RIDICULOUSLY HUGE fireworks display going on right behind him for no real reason. The whole movie is filled with great unintentionally(?) funny moments like this and Scorsese experiments with the camera in ways that simply do not stand the test of time. Don't get me wrong, I love this movie but it is absolutely ridiculous and demands to not be taken seriously.
Fantastic performance by De Niro!! The cinematography (especially the split-focus/diopter shot) seemed to be inspired by some of Brian De Palma's work (who of course worked with De Niro in a lot of their early careers). Over the top and great!
Absolutely retarded. Too comical and overwrought to be scary. The end 'payoff' was all deus ex machina and the protagonist wasn't even redeemed.
He was about to watch his daughter get raped and he wasn't even tied up. He was just letting it happen. Wtf?
Detestable from start to finish, garish music. Some attempts at style in the cinematography are wasted because they're all thrown together without a cohesive idea behind them.
All of the literature references are crude and hamfisted. "He's reading Zarathustra by Nietzsche.. the guy who said god is dead." Terrible schlock. Quite possibly Scorsese's worst movie, although I'm almost certain more cooks were in the kitchen on this.

God
Hilarious. Robert De Niro speaking in tongues at the end of the movie had me in tears.dajmasta94

De Niro is a god!Namfoodle
Unneccesary remake, even if it's Scorsese, not as good as the original. The Tramp
"I am like God, and God like me. I am as large as God, He is as small as I. He cannot above me, nor I beneath Him be."For me De Niro was the best actor, in the 'crime' genre, of the 20th century!
