Not only a simple love story but also a digression on Western liberalism as an ideology with no real liberty and independence. The liberal option for 19th India was a pure delusion.

Great movie, if Kurosawa really said that @rohit, I will also try to see Pather Panchali and Shatranj Ke Khilari. Very interesting the relation of India and Britain in the late 19th century, and how in 1963 it was common that the characters talks some words in english in an Indian movie..

Despite the fact that my grandmother went fox hunting with Ray in 1953-1954, I gave this an 8!
